Any Springfield area nesties?
I know this is the "Boston" board, but there doesn't seem to be a Western MA board that I can dig up. DH and I are moving out to the Springfield area for his new job this summer and I was wondering if anyone knew about any neat restaurants, shops, or arty neighborhoods that way.
We are looking specifically at the Longmeadow/East Longmeadow areas in our house hunting search. It's amazing what you can get out there! For the price we paid for our two bedroom condo by MGH we can get a five bedroom house and 2 acres! Crazy!
Thanks!
Re: Any Springfield area nesties?
I grew up in Springfield, but haven't lived there in a while. Longmeadow/E. Longmeadow is really nice, though, and their school systems are (or were) really good. Tru-fact: Bon Jovi and his wife had a house in E. Longmeadow for a while, because their son was going to school in western MA. So you'll be in good company.
For art-y stuff, Northampton/Amherst would be your best bets. Both college towns, there's a much more relaxed vibe than Springfield. There are also some really good restaurants out that way, too.
Heh, I find that true of most people from eastern MA. When I came out to the Boston area for college, people had NO IDEA where Springfield was. Half of them thought it was in Connecticut, and the other half thought it was nowhere near CT.
I thought of a few other things: There are some museums in Springfield (I don't remember them being MFA good, but still interesting.) I was obsessed with the GWV Smith museum's Japanese collection as a kid. They're all located at the Quadrangle, right downtown, which is also where the Dr. Seuss sculpture garden is.
They also have a Symphony that performs regularly - their Holiday Pops show is really fun. (Disclaimer: my mom sings with the symphony chorus in that show, so I may be biased.)
If you venture further out to the Berkshires, there's a ton of stuff to see and do. Stockbridge has the Edith Wharton house, the Norman Rockwell museum, Chesterwood, and a pretty cute downtown area, and Tanglewood is out that way. (It's probably an hour, hour and half from Springfield.) There's a good art museum in Williamstown, the Clark Art Institute. You're also about an hour or so away from the Yankee Candle mother ship. And Northampton/Amherst have a lot of book stores, restaurants (my brother and his girlfriend drive out there regularly when they want a nice dinner out), and little arty shops. And in South Hadley is the Odyssey Bookshop, which is one of my all-time favorite independent bookstores.
And you'll also be about a half-an-hour to Hartford, which has some great theater (the Hartford Stage is nationally recognized and more "serious" or "theatrical", while the Bushnell gets the more popular fare - musicals and the like), and the Wadsworth Atheneum, which is the oldest public art museum in the country.
Oh, this is excellent! Thank you so much! I am saving this post so I can refer to it later!
I knew that Tanglewood and Jacobs' Pillow was out that way, but I had no idea just how many museums and historical sites were there too. Northampton looks interesting as well.
We are pretty excited to be moving out there. I'm a native Bostonian, so I'm a little sad to be leaving the city, but I'm looking forward to learning about the area. Again, thank you!
