found letters from my dad

I went to my mom's today and she showed me 3 letters she found while going through some of my dad's things.  They had a sticky note on them saying to be opened only if something has happened to him.  :(  He had one for my mom, DD and myself.  It was so hard to read them, I waited until I got home for Paige to open hers and me to read it to her.  I couldn't get through it w/o crying. She just rubbed my hand and got her stuffed animal she hugs when she misses grandpa, gave it to me and then kept rubbing my hand.  I just want to box up the letter and take it everywhere i go.  I just want to hug the letter all the time.  ugh... this is so hard.  :(

Re: found letters from my dad

  • oh that is so incredibly bittersweet *hugs*

i would make copies of the letters and keep those with you, then put the original letters in a safe place.

    Good Idea :)

I'm sure you will treasure those letters forever. I love that he thought to do something like that for you. He sounds like a wonderful dad.

  • I can only imagine the flood of emotions you experienced reading those letters.

    (((hugs)))

  • Oh I can't even imagine, but really how nice to have them forever. So thoughtful of him to take the time to write them.
  • That's incredible that you have those :)  I know it must be extremely bittersweet, but keep those close to you always.  I love what Cheeky suggested.  Big hugs to you!
  • Oh Heather, that's so tough.  But you will cherish those forever, you know that!  My Mom passed away suddenly so she didn't have any type of foreknowledge.  I wish I had something from her like that.  However, she apparently had already had bought my sister and I each a Christmas gift before she passed (she died at the end of October) and my sister found them.  She bought us each some air freshener from Yankee Candle.  I still have it 5 1/2 years later and haven't once sprayed it.  Crazy, right?  HUGS to you!

josh's mom recorded a few tapes each for him & his sister. josh still has one the last one and hasn't ever listened to it.

  • I think I will copy them.  weird thing is that they were dated last March, the day before he went in for his surgery the first time.  He never knew he was going to the hospital this time and not coming home. :(

I am so glad others have things left behind as well.  Funny how DH hasn't listened to the last one yet. and pam, you are not crazy not to use it... if you did, it would have the chance to be gone eventually.  My thinking, you never want that freshener to be gone.  I am just glad that i have this and will cherish it for the rest of my life.

Oh this made me tear up.  Huge hugs going out to you, I truly cannot even imagine the pain you must be going through.  I'm glad you have those letters from your dad though.  That's very special!
  • Oh my gosh, what a wonderful gift from your father, but what a hard thing to read.  *hugs*

  • I can imagine how hard that was for you Heather. I am not going to lie....I am jealous. I wish I had a letter from my dad. His sickness came on so suddenly that there was no real time. By the time we found out just how bad he was, he was already fighting for his life in Miriam.

As much as it totally sucks what you are going through you need to cherish those letters. You are very lucky that he gave you that gift while he was still alive.
