S/O what to do with this room...

If your house had a Florida room in the back, what would you use it for? We have a long skinny room on the back of our house, it's got windows on all the walls and we just put in a door so you can access the backyard. It is adjacent to the kitchen and eating area.

Before I moved in and DH had roommates it had a couch and a tv with a video game console. Since I moved in it has served as a dining room sorta. The kitchen eating area had a 4 person round table, so we put the bigger (longer) table in the florida room. It was nice to be able to seat 10 or 12 if we needed to, but the room is narrow enough that it was a tight squeeze when people were sitting at the table. We also had my piano in there but I am thinking it might be better off in a room without so much sunlight heating.

We are redoing this room now - replacing wood paneling with drywall, replacing yucky carpet with tile, etc, etc, so I have some freedom to "reinvent" the space. Any suggestions??

Re: S/O what to do with this room...

  • I would make an entertaining/workout area. TV and open space to put my mat down and do my videos or equipment if you have it. Then also some casual chairs and table to watch the game or whatever.

  • I'll be interested in seeing the answers to this because as mentioned in the other thread, our Florida/sun room/whatever room is almost totally empty.

Oh and our living room has a window out into that room.  Nice.

  • My living room has a window into the garage. Nice!
  • Most I've seen are for entertaining.  I'd like to have one and have some couches/chairs...maybe a little reading nook, a tv, space for a dining table for add'l seating for large groups.  Maybe a pool/poker table?  Maybe a karaoke area?  My aunt had an awesome FL room with a hot tub and a bar.  It wasn't at all cheesy like it sounds.  I'll have to see if I can find some pics.

I like this idea a lot, except that right now I do all my workouts in the office because I can close the door and no one can see me. I think I'd feel weird to do it in a room with so many windows. But I have no problem going running in public so obviously I have serious issues lol.

  • Florida rooms to me mean big ploofy chairs for reading and an indoor garden.

    Ditto.

  • Game room. I'd have an air hockey table and a bar and a tv. I'd also love a place to put a treadmill or stationary bike so I'd put that out there too.

  • If it makes a difference to anyone, the room is only 8 ft wide and is typically the hottest room in the house. Some previous owner closed in the porch and the AC ducts are seriously undersized.

I chose that because I don't have a great workout area, I have to push the couch back and do it in my living room. I do it with the blinds open and don't give a hoot who sees me, but you guys probably realized I don't get embarrassed by much.

  • I think a casual sitting room would be nice. I think you said it's off the kitchen so it would be convenient if you're entertaining amd cooking.

This would be nice except you can't really see into the room if you're in the kitchen cooking. I suppose you could if you were sitting in the breakfast nook.

This room is really starting to annoy me.

  • I'd use it for a cross between a game room, entertaining space, workout area, and basic hang out area to read, etc. Nice sized tv, maybe a bar, any workout equipment, comfy furniture.
