Banks/Credit Unions

We have been using Bank of America now for awhile for our checking and some savings and we're done with paying all of the lovely fees they like to charge. We are considering switching to a local credit union, but we want to make sure we don't have to worry about any fees down the line. Who do you use? What do you like/dislike about them?

Re: Banks/Credit Unions

  • I'm just going to put this out there that that's a *really* personal question.

    Welcome to the board, though!

  • I'm just looking for some direction here, not account numbers.

  • How is that personal?  Hmmm...maybe I'm slow.

Anywho, if you pay for any account now a days I think it's silly. Credit Unions I like around town... A+ Credit Union, University Federal Credit Union, and Austin Telco.

  • I don't have any account fees and I'm with Chase. I prefer a larger bank as opposed to a local credit union for when I travel. When we go to California in May I'm pretty sure there is a Chase in town that I can get money from an ATM without fees...

I guess I'm slow too.  I don't mind this question.

We use Regions bank.  We used to have a savings account through Texans Credit Union (in Dallas, don't know if it's even around here) but they had more fees.  We just have the basic free checking and savings account and haven't had any issues.  They only charge a fee if you overdraft but if you have the savings account it serves as a type of "protection" for things like that.   Occasionally, the website is down and I can't check the account online but I think that could happen with anything that's online.

I was wondering the same thing. We use BOA so I'm no help.

  • Thanks girls!! The hubs and I are going to visit some of your recommendations this weekend so we can hopefully save a bit of mullah.

  • First id recommend Austin Telco FCU, then University Federal CU
  • Love: RBFCU (randolph brooks); it's local, but extends from Georgetown to SA, and networks with other credit unions for free use of atm's; no fees, free autodraft, great loan rates, etc. I absolutely love them!

Hate: UFCU; not all accounts are free; fees for things as simple as making a deposit if you have certain types of accounts; less user friendly than others I've experienced.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • Oh, and on the fees thing - with most credit unions, you can withdraw cash from an ATM at any credit union in the network nation wide without fees.  I moved to NC, and still bank with UFCU with minimal fees because of this.:)

I also use chase and switched to them from BOA 5 years ago and never had any fees.

  • I am another person who loves RBFCU!! :) (Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union)

  • I'm late to answering this question, but I use Capitol Credit Union. They haven't ever charged me a fee, and I can use ATM's at almost any other Credit Union in town (except I think RBFCU) for free. The tellers are nice and I picked it because there's a location next to my work and close to my house.

I too don't think this question is that personal. People ask all the time for recommendations for doctors, and this doesn't seem that different to me!
