Cleaning soot off of fireplace mantel

I have a fireplace mantel that is getting pretty dark with soot from our fires.  I believe the fireplace mantel has been painted, or coated with something, because you can tell, because its stone or concrete.  Have any ideas?  TIA!

Re: Cleaning soot off of fireplace mantel

  • Scrubbing bubbles! If you are concerned do a small test area, before going at it.
  • Mr Clean Magic Eraser.

I accidentally left the flue closed one time while using the fireplace and got soot everywhere. it took me forever to clean, but it worked great..

  • Scrubbing Bubbles should work and if not, get Saver System's ACS from your local chimney sweep or you may be able to get it online (not sure though)

  • Hey, anyone know how to get ash out of fireplace? I've swept and swept and swept, but can I use a shopvac to suck up the remainder ash dust?

As long as it is completely cooled, definately!

Ditto.  That's what we usually do a day or two after a fire.
