Minor freak out

I got a call from some company for DH today to call back regarding some case number, which was totally weird. Then my Dad calls like 10 min later saying same company called them about DH w/this case number and to call them back. So now I'm like wtf?

I look them up online and they're a debt collection agency, but a skeevy one by the sounds of it. So I freak out, because I'm so positive we don't have any bad debts in collection. During lunch I pulled H's credit reports, and sure enough there's a charge off that just happened in January and was sent to collection.

Funny thing is that when I look at the payment history, "we" have been paying on time until just a few months ago when it looks like "we" just stopped paying. So now I'm convinced this belongs to someone else. I know I didn't just stop paying on a credit card last year after making regular payments!

I tried to call to find out more info but of course they wouldn't give me any info since this card is supposedly in H's name only. Another weird thing: DH has a cousin with the same name as him that lives up here. We got a collection call for him when we lived in our old house here. So I'm wondering if it's maybe his? I sure hope so, because if not I'm going to flip the F out.

On a positive note: CC company was able to reverse my transfer from yesterday without charging me any fees. Yay!

  • Yikes! I would be freaking out too! That's scary! By the way this sounds, I'm thinking it's your hubby's cousin. I'm sure they just got the names mixed up since u said they've called before. Your hubby and cousin have the same name?

  • I think it must be the cousin, especially if you've gotten collection calls for him before.

They do have the same name, although I think the middle name is different. We called and they're going to start a fraud investigation. No charges have been made on it, it's just been a yearly annual fee that has accrued interest and late charges by what the guy said. So we'll see.

  • Not cool. Don't trust the collection agency to just take care of it, they don't care who they get their money from. Stay on it.

    Yup, I agree also.

H had something like this on his report to...it was a PIA to get off, but he got it off. Good luck.

  • This used to happen to my dad all the time...someone with his exact name living in the same town...actually it's happened to FIL too. And their name twins are certainly evil!

Oh no, we called the CC company directly. I'm not dealing with some scammy collection agency. They can kiss my butt!

Good. Just stay on the cc company too, and make sure when you clear it up with them that they really call off the collection agency. Just because the cc company says your ok doesn't mean a trashy collection agency won't keep hounding you.
