Cleaning Services

Who here has one? I have questions.

How often do they come?

What do they all do for you?

Is it expensive? You don't have to say exactly how much if you don't want, I just want to know how much is "too much".

I'm asking because A: I don't have time to clean my own house. I get the basics done, but I'm lacking in the deep cleaning department... and B: I really hate cleaning!

Re: Cleaning Services

  • I have a lady that comes. She comes bi-weekly and we just started her in Jan. She has been cleaning kevins mom's house for 20 years so she gave us a great deal. Plus we really aren't home much and I always keep my house clean. She just does the deep cleaning and its nice to have it all done at one time vs when I would do it. Bc I work so much I would have to divide the stuff I clean at home which meant my house was never fully cleaned at the same time. Anyways, she only charges us $50 per time so $100 a month. I provide all of the products. She dust, vavuumes, cleans the bathrooms and bedrooms. She washes my hardwoods monthly instead of each time bc they just don't get that filthy. We have a 3br 1.5 bath and as of now, we only use 1 of the brms. She doesn't do our basement or anything bc it isn't finished. She doesn't change bedding or anything but I didn't need that. She originally quoted $75 but I said we couldn't swing that and she dropped it bc I got her 3 other new clients. If you have any other questions let me know. Sorry this is mumbled up. I'm on my phone and too lazy to proofread or make paragraphs lol.

  • Also, we got rid of cable and it pays for her. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It has been so wonderful to not have to worry about it. I've calmed down a lot with my crazy ocd

  • My mom cleans houses, but she's freelance. My grandmother did before her.

She charges between 15-20 dollars an hour, and usually cleans 3 or 4 hours either once or twice a month.

She does pretty much anything that the people want her to, save some things like cleaning up after the dogs when they make messes, laundry, other personal things like that. She does vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, bathrooms, kitchens, mopping, etc.

Based on things I've heard about cleaning services in our area, lots of people have switched from a company like merry maids to someone like my mother. My mom gets all her houses from referrals. So basically, if possible, see if anyone you know/work with/ hang out with has a specific person that they use as opposed to a cleaning service company.

  •  We do.  We started having her come when I was on bedrest and planned on having her come once a week just while P was really little.  It turned out that she still comes because I basically have zero time to clean because he isn't a napper at all.  It is worth it to us because otherwise we would spend our family time cleaning our house when L is home on the weekends.  We have 2 dogs so it gets messy/furry/dusty quickly, so it is totally worth it.  How often do they come?  Once a week.  What do they all do for you?  Dusting, mopping, vacuuming, windows, bathrooms, wash and change sheets, kitchen, some laundry, anything we need her to do.  She is her for 3 hours.  Is it expensive? It is $80 a week.  It is expensive but to us it is worth it and we have cut so many other things out sine Parker arrived(like going out on the weekends and for dinner a lot) so it all balances out.  We won't have her come weekly forever but we will probably always have someone to at least come monthly to do deep cleaning.
  • Random question: Do they only do the basic cleaning stuff or if you have a disaster of a closet, will they organize it?

Also, for those with dogs, how did you get your dogs to accept that a "random" person was going to come into the house when you are not there?

  • My parents have a service contract with a cleaning company just for "deep cleaning". They come 4 times a year (April, July, October, January) and do all the heavier cleaning stuff that takes forever and sucks. (like washing walls and baseboards, cleaning all the windows, etc.) They pay $325/year for this, and it usually takes 2 women about 4-5 hrs to do it.

My parents dog HATES the cleaning ladies. They usually bring him over our house to hang out.

They tried introducing him to them, had them come over a few times to meet him and no dice.

My lady doesn't do closets etc but I LOVE doing that stuff and now I have time to. My one dog is so easy going he loves her. She let's him in and out and he just snuggles up with her for a few mins when she gets there. My other dog is a b!tch and she just hides under the bed lol. She's much better though now that she's used to the cleaner.

I have never had her do this but I am sure she would, she would probably just need to stay longer.  As far as the dogs, I am lucky and H brings them to work with him everyday so I really don't have to worry about them.

  • We used to have one. It was about $150 every other week (or every time they came out). They did the floors, dusting, bathrooms, kitchen. Once we stopped using them and I started doing everything myself, I realized they weren't doing such a great job with everything. My windows were so dirty. Ew.

They did have extra services they would do for an additional cost like baseboards or whatever.

We might have to start using someone again when I get too huge and/or when the baby is here. We'll see how it goes, but I really prefer cleaning my own house!

We didn't have Lola when we used the cleaners before, so I'm not sure how that would work out now...

  • Oh man, now I want to hire someone, just to give our house a good cleaning.  Ever since Sami was born, I feel like I just can't keep up with it anymore, and I'm feeling like it's turning into a hellhole... gotta keep my eyes open for a Groupon or something, because there's no way we can afford that kind of expense right now =(

I feel this way too! I'd love to hire someone to just come give it a good scrubbing. It just seems like I can never get it all done. I'm so nervous about Stees and Andy coming this weekend because I'm afraid they'll think my house is gross!

That's what I really want anyway! I'm not looking for someone to come everyweek. Just to come maybe once a month and do all the crap that I hate.. lol

I would do this in a heartbeat, if I wasn't afraid of them making fun of me or talking behind my back about how gross my house is. I don't think its that bad-and its not on the surface....but I rarely dust baseboards, only wash my walls when I notice they are dusty, etc....so I'm sure when you look deeper its gross. I'm so paranoid about that, I won't hire someone. :(

I've never dusted my baseboards!  People do this? I've never washed my walls either (unless you can count using one of those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers to remove a mark).  I rarely dust unless I see a visible coating on a shelf or a table or something.  All I've ever done are the basics: vacuum, clean toilets, mirrors, countertops/sinks, and sweep up all the kitty litter that finds its way onto our wood floors.  I only clean the glass on the sliding doors if I notice handprints/nose prints from pets. H and I don't change our sheets enough either, I'm sure.  So as far as a "deep clean" my house is probably totally filthy!  I just make sure it looks presentable when company comes over and have never given a thought to cleaning "deeper" than that.  Yikes.
