I have been laid off since Jan 4th of this year and I am looking for admin assistant/bookkeeper jobs. I have been on 2 interviews with no success and have sent out a bunch of resumes in the last couple of months. I have also met with 2 temp agencies and have them looking for me.

Today, one of the temp agencies called me with a job that she thought I should look at. 3 things - it pays $1.50/hr less than my previous job, it is temporary for now (not for sure going to full time) and they want someone to start on Monday.

The job sounds like something I would be interested in but I am worried about the temporary part. What would you do in this situation? I am on unemployment and taking this job would pay more than that but if it only lasts for 4 months then I have to start all over. Any advice?

I would seriously consider taking it. When I lost a job in July of '09, it took me until end of December that year to find something full time (through a temp agency). In the interim, I took a contingent position making nearly $3 less an hour than my previous job but it was definitely much better than what unemployment paid. Have you been to the interview yet for this job? Too, consider that if you do take this job and it does end up being temp to perm, likely you'll get an increase with that change.

I agree with the PP.

I don't see a negative side to taking this job. This temp job could lead you to a permanent one. Try to see countdown the 4 months of possibly having to start over, take each day as it comes.

I think only good can come from taking this job. It will give you a chance to network in the working world again, if nothing else. Plus, you will be making more than unemployment.

Definitely take it. A temporary position could be perfect. It gives you the opportunity to keep your resume strong and keep an income, but also keeps the door open. You can (and should) still apply for other jobs, but you never know... it could turn out to be a dream job, or could turn out to be permanent, or you could learn something you didn't know before. You really don't have anything to lose.

Take it! If it's temporary you will just get laid off and be able to collect unemployment again. However, anything temporary could turn into a permanent position. My temporary job did eventually. Plus, it's always good to have positive references in your corner, even if you only work there for 4 months. Congratulations!
