Hey everyone,
Im in such a bind. Here it goes.
My husband and I live in Arkansas. We got married on June 26th 2010. My husbands family lives in Michigan. My husbands brother and his fiance just decided to get married on June 25th of this year 2011. This kind of sucks, because of course we want to attend the wedding, but we also want to take a one year anniversary trip. Typically this wouldnt be a problem, but my husband will not and I mean he refuses to ride a plane. So anywhere we travel, we drive! So here is the point of this post. Can yall give us any ideas of where to travel to, maybe before or after his brothers wedding that wouldnt require to much driving on top of what we are already having to do. We really dont want to drive over 12 hours anywhere we go.
Any ideas would be great. Thanks!
Re: Anniversary
None of the states you pass through to get to Michigan are ones I would choose to take a one year annivesary trip to.
How far away is Florida from where you are?
Not to sound snarky, but if your husband absolutely refuses to fly, you need to either embrace long drives or no trips.
PS - I am also terrified of flying. They make fabulous drugs for that. Or just be old fashioned and booze him up before the flight takes off.
MH is also terrified of flying. He about had a panic attack thinking about the plane ride for our honeymoon. He had a few stiff drinks in the airport before the plane took off (bloody marys at 6:30 am- gotta love it) and a few more once we got on. He was still freaked out a bit, but he made it. I keep trying to talk him into some of those great drugs.
There are a lot of lakes in Missouri. Do you all like that sort of thing? We always go up to Table Rock Lake outside of Branson, MO in July- have family there. They have resorts right on the lake (Chateau on the Lake, Big Cedar Lodge), then there's Branson, Silver Dollar City, and other touristy places close.

If you have the money I would definitely head up to The Island. It's really nice (no cars, just bikes, carts and buggies), but it's not like amish village or anything. There are a bunch of bars, lots of great restaurants and nice hotels. (I DO NOT recommend the Grand Hotel. it's just not that great for what you pay, to be honest, and the other hotels and Inns have much more charm IMO.) it's 9 miles around, there are tons of bike trails and it's really beautiful in the summer. It can get pretty packed during Lilac season, but you don't always have to be in the busy areas.
You can also go to the west side, Traverse City area, there are a lot of wineries, and the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes are up there. We have a lot of water front, in michigan, and very nice beaches. Grand Rapids is also a nice city.
If you like camping, we've got more than anyone needs. roughing it, and the easy kind. You can go high class, or nature hike pretty much anywhere in Michigan.
It does get warm (upper 80s low 90s) in the middle of june, so you shouldn't have to worry about crappy weather. it was 94 degrees on my wedding day (6/19)
If you're thinking seriously about spending time in the mitten definitely head over to the Detroit board, they'll rec TC/GR and Mackinac, but they will probably have other good suggestions as well. Lots of us like to keep the vacations close to home when we dont have a lot of time or $$. there's definitely plenty to do.
Edit to add: yes, any of these options can be romantic. i know A LOT of people who got engaged on the island. there are millionaire mansions and stuff up there. it's nice. it's not just a booze cruise. (my family is from the island, so it's not exactly romantic for me, so i always forget to mention that)

Ditto all Nobody said about Mackinaw Island and Traverse City. Both are great. Traverse City area has tons of wineries if you guys are in to that!
ETA: Or, what about Chicago? I have a friend who lives there and absolutely loves it.
And, depending on where in Michigan the wedding is, you might not be too far from the Upper Penninsula. Taquamenon Falls (sp?) and Pictured Rock in the UP are both really cool.
Ditto... my parents live in Michigan and love going here on vacation!!!!
