Why do people destroy foreclosed on houses?!

There are 2 houses in my neighborhood that have been foreclosed on (I assume). They are completely cleared out and have the trespassing notices on the doors. Anyway, one looks like it is fine on the inside, the people just took what was theirs and left, the other is destroyed! I mean for these houses being 4 years old MAX up here, they destroyed it! They ripped all the cabinets out, broke the boards in half and threw them outside. The staircase spindles are broken, the yard is completely torn up....it is just sad to see a nice, fairly new house look like that :-( I just don't get it. Take the big things if you want to make some money, but don't destroy a nice house!

Re: Why do people destroy foreclosed on houses?!

  • Because they're A-Holes!!!

people do it becasue they can't afford the house, the bank has it, and they might as well make them pay for the repairs, but they don't get that when the new people buy it the bank will sale it for less!

  • That just burns my arse!  I don't get it either.  The lender gave them the loan but in those cases I suspect they got in over their heads and never made the tough choices to cut expenses.  Why cut out the unnecessary things in life to help you afford your house, just keep spending and blame the lender!  We had a house in our neighborhood that was foreclosed on.  I didn't go through it but one of the neighbors did.  It wasn't destroyed, but there was dog poop on the carpet.  EWWW!  Now there is a very nice family living there.

In full disclosure I used to work for a large financial institution and DH is in the mortgage business.

  • Ugh!  Kills me, too.  Especially because people like that just drive the value of surrounding homes down.  It's like a vicious cycle...and usually those that do these things don't understand the consequences.
