storage solution for toys?

What do you guys do? My 3 year old has a crap load of toys. I have gotten rid of some, and still, there is a lot. I am looking for something to make the room look more organized. I am looking for a large, reasonably priced toy chest or something. I also don't want something that will break or fall apart soon after buying. As of right now, he has this. Thanks in advance!

ETA: He also has two large bins of toys as well

Re: storage solution for toys?

  • I feel your pain; I have three small ones under foot too.  Toys galore, even though I do go through them every six months..best solution, I know Home Depot as something like a "how to" on building a simple toy box.  Call your local HD and see if they have the plans to make it, or if they will be doing the how to it for soon.  I would go on CL and see if anyone is getting rid of a chest. My solution is to throw out, and donate.
  • We have this (because it was in the closet from college days)

    And we got these

Right now we have 6 bins.  3 blue and 3 red.  (we will get 3 for baby #3 when we know a color)

Each bin is a different set of toys

    Blocks

    legos

    cars

    books

    bowling

    Other (stuffies, balls, anything else)

This has worked great for my twins and they will help me clean up and they put things in the right bins.

  • DS1 has a large rubbermaid bin in his room for some toys.  Our playroom has a walk-in closet and I asked DH to install a crap load of shelves (and we're still busting at the seams toy wise).  That's all upstairs.  We spend most of our day on our main level downstairs.  In the LR I have their changing table, I have a basket that I can throw toys into on one shelf, the lower shelf holds a bigger toy and a few trucks.  Their ride on toys all go in a cabinet or pantry (we have extra cabinet space, 3 cabinets are dedicated to ride on's and we have 1 in the pantry).
  • We have a built in storage unit in our family room with baskets from Pottery Barn for little toys. Bigger things go in Crate and Barrel storage cubes. We wanted the house to still looked like grown up lived there and not have all the toys out on display
  • In DD's room I have this toy box from Target (which also comes in a boy version which isn't out of stock right now).  I like it because it was super cheap ($20), it holds a bunch of stuff, and it's collapsable so if I ever get sick of it, it'll be easy to collapse and store out of the way.

I also have a bunch of those canvas bins that you can buy anywhere (the kind with a metal frame covered with canvas).  The furniture in our living room is big enough to fit these inside -- I have one in each end table, and our coffee table fits four of them (and has doors that close so you can't see them!)

I still have a few baskets of toys in the living room, but having those bins put away takes care of a lot of the clutter!!
