I posted a few weeks ago about an outrageous $330 Duke bill we got. I did all sorts of things after that to try to reduce our usage--unplug things, changed some light bulbs, turned the heat down another degree, etc.
So I got my bill for this month, and I had a nearly $100 refund. So I immediately adjusted the thermostat up that little degree--we are shivering over here (warmer weather, come soon!)
Obviously Duke was billing me an estimated bill, instead of an actual bill. Kind of makes me mad, kind of makes me relieved that we weren't actually using that much energy!
Re: Duke Energy bill update
I'm glad that you got it figured out. That def stinks.
We've been pleasantly surprised this winter that our bill continually keeps going down. We had whole house insulation installed in April 2010 and it has made a HUGE difference. We were never able to keep our heat above 58 before it was done; now we are up to 68 which is perfect for us. We haven't had to run a space heater most of the winter so that has also cut down the bill tremendously.
We used Central Insulation Systems in Norwood.

The first company that we had come out told us $6K. Now granted our house is pretty ginormous (almost 2100 sq ft) that seemed a bit steep. So I feel your pain!
We decided (after tons of research!) to go with the blown in the walls insulation. The foam is great, but we found a few drawbacks to it that we didn't want to deal with. We didn't want the rolled kind b/c that would've meant tearing some large areas of the walls in every room out and that wasn't something we wanted to pay for. I gave you some more detail on what we had done, but I PM'd you.
