BC pills preventing sex drive?

I've always been on the pill since I started college, but never used it as birth control until last year (so that's....about 7 years).

It seems like the only time I truly get "in the mood' is while I'm on my placebo/period week. Has anybody else had experience with this? Do you think this could be a sign that being on the pill prevents me from having a real sex drive? Does the week that I'm off it show what it would be like if I was not on the pill? Or is it all in my head because we don't have sex during my period, so I "want" it only because I can't have it?

Insight? Sorry if it was confusing!

  • A lower dosage version of the pill may help you. Talk to your doctor and also read the little paper that comes with your prescription it will list normal side effects.

Also I have experienced what feels like a higher sex drive during the "off week" but it's mostly frustration because you can't. When your period is over do you pounce on your guy? If you do then I think its probably just frustration building.

  • i'm experiencing the same thing. i've been taking loestrin 24 for about 4 years but they just came out with lo loestrin which has half the amount of estrogen. i'm gonna give it a try and see if it makes a difference.

  • I feel the same way. I've been on BC for 7+ years as well and I am only in the mood during "shark week" as we call it in my house. I've tried going to a lower dosage but it didn't seem to help. There was a time where I was off BC for a few weeks and it totally made a difference - so the pill might be the issue for some women.
  • I had that problem too... then my BC went WAY up (d/t stupid insurance making me pay more for less coverage) so I quit taking it.. been off it for about 3 months now and its been a HUGE difference for me... for some reason it hurt a lot to have sex when i was on BC too.. it was weird.. but yea, after i quit taking it i actually wanted to have sex again AND it quit hurting.  I was using nuvaring and according to my gyno it had really low hormones in it so taking some other "low hormone" pill wouldn't really help. good luck
