My BOSS is three managers above me: BOSS - Boss - boss - ME.
BOSS used to be not only my peer and colleague, but also my friend and mentor. We used to work for the same company, were the same title (even though he has significantly more professional experience than me). He went to another company as this BOSS, and spent >6 months trying to hire me. Now I'm on the staff, and our relationship has changed. I have to worry about the perception of favoritism. I don't get to talk to him if I have a problem anymore, I have to go to boss and/or Boss. The mentorship is gone. I'm sad. I guess I'm just venting because I miss hanging out with him, and he's the reason I came to this job. Wah TeamC...
I wouldn't be so worried by it except that I'm at a point in my career where I expect to get all of my future jobs through networking and friends, and I don't want this to become a pattern. Has anyone else dealt with this? Ideas for coping?
Re: Colleague to Boss Confusion
Is boss able to be some sort of mentor?
Can BOSS suggest someone lower than him who can be a mentor?
Are you networking with people closer to your level?

boss is retiring and trying to set me up to take his place; that said, he's useless (but very nice and supportive).
I'm networking at the BOSS level, but across organizations right now (outside of BOSS purview), because I don't know what else to do. Let's just say there's a lot of drama in this organization that I don't think BOSS is aware of, and he thought he could groom me in his org, but I'm thinking I need to leave after I get my requisite time in. But I don't feel like I can tell him this anymore now that he's BOSS and not my mentor.
