Hello! I just discovered this board and I am excited that it exists! I currently work for a non-profit in which I assist college students in locating internships. Through this, I have discovered a passion in helping students figure out career paths and help with road blocks along the way.
I have considered going back for my master's for school counseling. Since I would have to eventually quit my job to do practicum work within a school, I really think it would make sense to just go full-time and try to get a GA position.
Before I make that commitment, I am wondering if there are any school counselors out there that I can speak with about the field.
Thanks!!
Re: School Counselors?
Perhaps get an MSW... more opportunities, you aren't stuck in a corner.
School social work could be an option. I agree with PP though that the market for school counselors is small, so do your research.

Thank you everyone for the feedback! I had heard that it is somewhat difficult to get into schools (I live in a Pittsburgh suburb) but I also know that I can work at the university level as well.
Rachel- What program did you go through?? Can you tell me more about what schools are looking for in your experience?
Could you look at the vocational schools in the area? I know I did that for 2 years and *loved* it. I loved working with the college students, as a counselor and as a mentor. It was great. Now I've transitioned into private practice and I primarly work with children and adolescents. I've had a rocky start into the counseling field but I wouldn't change my path. I love what I do.... just wish i had the benefits/consistent pay of being in a school district.
