Making the switch to CD

I have wanted to do Cloth Diapers since DS was born but felt overwhelmed by all of the information and different kinds.  So for those of you that do CD  do you have any words of wisdom form making the switch? Or reason why you love to CD? I think I am going to sign up to the trial program from Jillians drawers to get an idea of what I like and go form there.

Re: Making the switch to CD

  • I'm still new at cd'ing, but we have been doing it since P was about two weeks old?  I can say that I love them so much more than disposables.  He was constantly peeing/leaking out of the disposables and the cloth seems to hold and contain so much more!

Also, good idea on the trial program.  It's best to try so many different types since you don't know what you'll love or work the best for your little one.  I never thought I would like prefolds at all and those actually work the best for us!  My H (who was very hard to get on board with cd'ing) even prefers those over the "easy" ones.

  • there is a DM cloth diapering group that meets the first tuesday of the month at 10am. It's a great place to check out different types of diapers and learn more about them. (It's a combined meeting iwth the DM Babywearing group so you can learn about baby carriers as well)

733 19th street (in sherman hill, about a block from smokey row), upstairs!

  • Head over to the bump to the cd board. There is a FAQ at the top and one of the girls has a spread sheet with reviews of different diapers and cd products. I also recommend doing a trial to see what will work the best for your baby. I can recommend the system and diapers that we use, but those brands might not fit your baby as well.

  • We cloth diapered from get-go. In the beginning with the cord and skinny legs the types of diapers that worked the best I hated (such as pre-folds, kissluvs - with covers). But then he filled out and we were able to switch to my favorite diaper - bum genius.

I like BG fitted AIO and BG one-size pockets. In recent months we have slowly decreased our use of cloth and switched to pull-ups but still CD at night.

    Good luck!

  • I'm the odd duck that uses CD's but I don't like them as much as sposies.  lol! SO my advice from that standpoint is to get your hands on as many different kinds of diapers you can and find a rearlly REALLY good fit. Try applix and try snaps. Because i'm lazy about the tabs in the laundry and because they scratch Ana's legs we cannot do applix/velcro, but that's what I started out with when we did prefolds for a while and I almost hated the experience from the beginning. Once I changed to snaps and pocket diapers and a few AIO's  I liked CD's much better. I'm still not sold but it definitely saves us $$$.

  • We used disposables the first couple of weeks when everything about being a parent was so new... But we had purchased & gotten our CD stock "ready" prior to baby's arrival.

85% of the time, I'm glad we CD.  I will say that we've never had a blowout or leak in the CDs -- but that's happened a couple of times when we've had her in sposies.  Like someone else said, they just really seem to hold more/better.

We use prefolds & Blueberry covers most of the time, and they work great. I also just purchased some more Swaddlebees pocket diapers, and we also love our Baby BeeHinds bamboo (especially for overnight).

I will say that sometimes, I just want to use a disposable.  It's not that the CDs are "harder" - but when I'm going somewhere & just want to toss in a Luvs & not take a wet bag, cover, etc., I like the convenience of a disposable.

CDs have definitely saved us money (particularly because we registered for some of our stuff at LPS & got goodies from family for our baby showers) -- and I feel good about not throwing away so many diapers.  But I'm thankful that we keep a sposie stash in the house for backup.

Oh - and I agree that a trial program & attending a CD group or another info session is a great idea.  You'll find what works best for your family.  Good luck!
