I'm trying to organize and get rid of stuff form our apartment. I haven't really had the opportunity to focus on this since the wedding when we got new stuff.
Problem 1: We got some new kitchen items (glasses, dishes, etc.). There is not room for both the old and the new, and normally I would get rid of the old ones. However, I'm hesitant because MIL is seriously destructive. Should I keep the old set so she can break some of those, or should I just assume we'll have to replace our plates all the time?
Problem 2: Our apartment is pretty small. Most of the space is occupied by DH's giant sound system and books (and we have a bike which has to live indoors). I'm not really into decorating and I have no idea what kind of storage furniture I could get that would help keep stuff organized. Any ideas?
Re: Suggestions needed...
I'm at a loss for problem #1 - I can't imagine keeping something so that your MIL would have something to break but I also can't imagine allowing my MIL in my home if she had a habit of breaking other peoples posessions. Not sure what to tell you there.
For #2 - maybe checkout The Container Store...they tend to have some great organizational stuff.
I totally feel you on the small spaces with no extra storage thing - I'm still trying to figure out a better way to organize as well

have you looked at IKEA for storage stuff? I love the container store like Linds suggested but they can be expensive.
Does your MIL live with you? I guess if there is no room I would get rid of the old, unless the new is too expensive to replace. Make her use paper plates lol
Ditto making her use paper plates if she's known to break them.
As for storage stuff, I really love the idea for this desk from Pottery Barn. It's pricey, but I think you can improvise it on your own by buying two smaller bookcases and a table top, if you or your H are a little bit handy. I'm hoping to get DH to help me do this within the next couple of months.
I've got nothing helpful for the first question. Although, H and I do have two sets of dishes... when we have friends over, we tend to use the older set just in case something breaks.
As far as the second one- I ditto IKEA. Look what I just got this weekend! That tv is 42" just for an idea of how massive the entertainment center is. Yet, it doesn't feel that big in our living room. (The room isn't all that big either, to be honest.) There is so much storage in it, though! It was extremely affordable, too, especially considering how big it is. I want to say it was just shy of $500 after taxes. (I didn't get all of the doors it shows.)

No, they just come for long stays. I never thought of paper plates. I have a feeling FIL and DH would really object, but MIL might not notice!
On her first visit, she damaged the food processor, a knife, the counter (with the knife), the bread board (I don't really know what it's called, but the thing you pull out in the kitchen), two towels, the carpet, and two book.
On her second visit (I had packed up a lot of stuff after the first time), she damaged a skillet and our tv. She also somehow got oil into the lentils, which are stored in big plastic bins.
Our new dishes aren't really expensive. It's more like a personality trait that I would be bothered if one broke since they are new.
Our coffee table is related to that desk! It does provide a lot of storage. We have a table in the bedroom which I could maybe replace with a smaller version of the desk. It turns out DH does not want any changes made to his electronics pile. For some reason I can't post the pic, but basically it takes up a whole wall and his speakers are about 5'6". We also already have 5 bookcases, which take up a lot of wall space. I liked the Container Store. I've never looked at it before, but I liked the section with tips.
Wow, does she at least apologize when she does this or is she just "oh well" about it?
I like both Ikea and The Container Store. See if there are things there that will help you be more organized. With small spaces good organization is really helpful!
