What weird stuff were you forbidden from as a kid?

Stole this from MM.  I'm interested to hear what Minnesotans were banned from as kids.

Re: What weird stuff were you forbidden from as a kid?

  • My mom was super conservative with me (oldest of 4) and now the youngest is 18 and she is super laid back.

I wasn't allowed to watch The Simpsons, read Goosebumps books, or date until I was 18 (I started dating DH 2 months short of my 18th birthday and she threw huge fits over it).

  • Bevis and Butthead...we of course watched it anyways when my mom was at work.

  • There wasn't really anything I was restricted from, I was the oldest, and yes she was strict, but I was the kid who did everything she wanted so I kind of got a free pass on most things.  The only thing she really threw a fit about was when I started dating my HS boyfriend, she wouldn't let me sleep over at his house, but I didn't have a curfew either so I just came home at 2-3am most nights...she threw fits because his house (yes he was a bit older) was in my parents' church neighborhood and she was worried people at church would see me leave his house at that hour...
  • When I was a teenager I wasn't allowed to go to concerts at 1st Ave. I could go anywhere else to see concerts just not there. My friend won tickets to the Silverchair concert at 1st Ave when I was in 9th grade and I was so mad that my mom wouldn't let me go.

  • I didn't live in MN but...

We weren't allowed to drink soda and once my parents found out what they were, I was not allowed to read any VC Andrews books.

By the time I was 16 they were finished giving me any restrictions.

  • I didn't grow up in MN but I wasn't allowed to watch Beverly Hills 90210 or Beevis and Butthead.

  • We weren't allowed to have regular pop or watch Married with Children, although I did both when no one was watching:)

  • Nothing comes to mind right now, but when I worked at Macy's I saw a dad forbid his DD from wearing any Hello Kitty. I am not sure what that's about, but months later I heard some internet thing was going around about HK being associated with the devil.

  • I seriously can't think of anything I wasn't allowed to do that would have been out of the ordinary.  I can't think of one single thing - which is weird because I think of my parents as being pretty strict.

Maybe that I wasn't allowed to have a tv or phone in my room (except I could bring the cordless phone in there).  But that even seems less weird now that I'm a parent.

  • My dad wouldn't let us watch The Goonies.  He caught like 10 seconds of the beginning of it and told us we weren't old enough.  I still don't know why.

My parents wouldn't let us have Nintendo at home but we had one at my grandparents house.  They took care of us when my parents were at work so we pretty much played Mario Bros. every day all day for an entire summer.

As a teenager, I didn't have a curfew.  I just had to call if I was going to be home after midnight.  One night I was going to my friend's house who lived down the block and my dad gave me a 9:00 curfew because he felt like it.

  • No Play Doh or Silly Putty or anything that made a mess.

    No cable tv.

I didn't watch Disney movies either - I got nightmares from watching Aladdin so I couldn't watch them anymore. Oh, well. I think I've only seen The Little Mermaid, half of Aladdin and the Lion King.

  • I honestly can't think of anything.  But I was a dreadfully boring kid who didn't even want to do anything "naughty" so my parents really didn't have to lay down many laws.  The only time I got in trouble was when I was mean to my little sister.

I do vividly remember having to do "ear muffs" during a scene in Planes, Trains, & Automobiles when I was pretty little.  :-)

I was the op of that, so you already read it. No Flintstones, I Love Lucy or Calvin Klein.

    Here are some bonus answers:
I was also banned from waking my parents up before 10am on weekends (8 am on Christmas morning). I wasn't allowed to take a bath before my dad woke up, because we had a one-bathroom house and if he woke up and had to pee and I was in the tub and he had to wait two minutes for me to get out and put on a robe, he flipped his sh!t.

In high school my parents also tried to ban me from the Internet. They even called the media center at school to tell them to not let me on. That didn't work out so well and eventually they gave up.

  • My parents put a password block on MTV.  However, they didn't realize that we also got VH1 and BET, both of which I think were less kid friendly.

  • My parents weren't super strict, but they would only let me watch a certain amount of TV per week.  If I didn't go to church with my mom on Sundays, I wouldn't be able to watch TV for the next week.  That didn't last very long though.

  • I don't think I really ever tested the boundaries that I thought my parents had for me, so I don't really know what was off limits.  My younger brothers on the other hand.... really wanted a playstation, when my parents refused to let them buy one (with their own money) they bought it anyways and hid it under the couch and took it out when my parents were gone....my mom eventually found it and they locked it in their gun safe so my brothers couldn't play it anymore.
  • When I was younger, we weren't allowed to say "crap" or "sucks"  That didn't last long once I entered middle school.

    No Siggy

My mom hated the word sucks! I still don't say it around her! haha

  • I couldn't use the words "Pissed" or "sucks" either!  And we were only allowed to use the word "Like" in its proper context or get sent to our room for a short time.  That like takes the like like right outta you!  Wink

I also wasn't allowed to eat sugary cereal until I was a grown up.  My Dad is a dentist so the only stuff we got was cheerio-s and Rice Krispies with either honey nut cheerios or frosted flakes as an occasional treat.  Even now, I don't tend to care much for the artificially colored super sugared stuff and my DH thinks I'm crazy because of it.  We also NEVER had soda in the house.

Probably one of the more painful ones though - my parents wouldn't let us attend a party unless they could walk up to the door with us to make sure that our buddy's folks where home.  It makes sense to me now as an adult but as a teenager it was the worst thing EVER.

  • Mine are similar to a few others:

-We couldn't watch The Simpsons.  Actually, we couldn't watch anything on FOX and we did not have cable either.

-We could not play video games as my parents refused to buy a game system of any kind.

-We couldn't say swear words, "pissed" or "sucks."

That's about it.  We were really good kids and rarely acted out, so the restrictions were pretty minimal.
