IUD Paragard Insertion

I have tried atleast 7 types of birth control pills and always had the worst side effects from them. I loved the patched but it is $60 a month, which I just did not want to pay that much. So I am getting the IUD inserted on Monday. I would love to know were some of the people who had them inserted experience like?

Thanks!

Re: IUD Paragard Insertion

  • I've had mine for 3 years. Take some ibuprofen at least an hour before you go. You will probably also get something to soften your cervix. The actual insertion was a little uncomfortable (i have not had any kids) and had some cramping the next 2 days. Nothing ibuprofen couldn't handle. Good luck :)
  • Thank you for your response. I have not had any kids either and a little worried about the pain. I will make sure to take some ibuprofen.

Did your menstrual cycles change any with the IUD?

  • it is a little heavier, but not any more crampy/uncomfortable.
  • I took Ibuprophen before and they gave me a hot pack to put on my abdomen while they did it. The actual insertion was still pretty painful but it was very quick.  After, I think I had some cramping but it was no big deal.  Periods were heavier at first but they got progressively lighter until they were back to normal after about a year.
  • Ditto the ibprofen.  It definitely hurt and is not something I'd like to do very often.  I had BAD cramps the day of insertion and the following day.  I found that a heating pad helped to ease the pain.  Good luck!  The process is quick and you will feel back to yourself completely in a few days.  It is definitely worth it!  :)
  • I've had mine for three years. It was inserted two months after my first born. I love it! I don't take medications or I keep them to a minimum if I need them. I can't swallow pills and I am terrified of needles. The IUD was an excellent choice. Great advice from the other ladies, however I feel grateful about my insertion. No pain, no discomfort. Slight cramping within the first hour and no problems since. My cycles have never been regular but they did seem pretty heavy. Since the IUD I still get fewer periods and they are light to regular. I hope this helps.
