Is this a dumb idea?

Sooooooo my mom's 7 year old golden retriever, who she calls "[her] heart" has cancer. They thought it was a fatty tumor, but it turned out not to be, and surgery wasn't able to remove it all.  It hasn't spread, luckily, and radiation in similar cases has been 90% effective at giving a full cure. Radiation, though, isn't cheap, and my dad has been out of steady work for years and been doing construction work with his brother, and there's no work there right now either. So less than ideal.

I had an idea to do pet photoshoots as a type of fundraiser for them... Take a few weekend days and do like 15-20min sessions with dogs (cats too, I guess!) for something relatively cheap -- $25? $30? They'd get a free 5x7 and a full size image (or a few images) via email to print as they wanted. I'd be up-front about where the money was going. I'd do a few free sessions to get photos to make some sort of promotional flyer, so that they could see what type of images they could expect..

Pet-lovers and non.... dumb idea? Potentially worth it?  Do you think ppl would be interested? I wouldn't think it was a waste of my time even if it didn't make buckets of money... I know everything will help.

Re: Is this a dumb idea?

  • First off, I'm SO sorry to hear. What a terrible day for dog lovers.Of course that's not a bad idea. Maybe you can make some calls and see if Petco or Petsmart would work with you? If not that, maybe contact local rescue groups so they can at least spread the word via FB? Twenty-five or thirty dollars for some pro pictures is a great deal! I think a lot of people would take advantage of that.Good thoughts to your mom. I know the dogs mean a lot to her.
  • So sorry to hear this, Jen. =(  Having pets is hard...their lives are so much shorter than ours.

I think it's a great idea and worth trying.

  • I'm so sorry, Jen. I think it's a great idea.

  • Thanks guys. I think part of my concern is that it would look like "yeah, I'm making money to give to my mom"...  Although it's not like I'm asking for donations -- I'm still providing a service..

I'll probably be back to bug you guys about this again when I figure out how I'm going to do it a bit more clearly..

  • First of all, so sorry about your mom's dog.

Second, I think that is a wonderful idea. I think people would jump on it. I don't think people would frown at the reason why you're doing it. I feel like most pet lovers would understand and think it's a wonderful thing to do. I wish I could get my cats to cooperate (fat chance) because I'd totally jump on having some cute professional photos of them.

  • uuuuugh they just got a test back and it's spread to his nearest lymph node and possibly into his abdomen. If I know my mom, she won't go through a more-aggressive treatment.

    Suckville.

  • I'm so sorry, that's such sad news :( I think what you want to do is really sweet and not dumb at all.  We've taken our boys to PetsMart for pictures with Santa :)

  • I'm sorry to hear that!

I don't think it's dumb at all, I love the idea and think it's a nice and generous thought.
