Tattoo shop recommendations?

Hello - I am looking for a local tattoo shop.

I have a black/grey tattoo on my foot of my daughter's handprint that I had done about a year ago that I'm not 100% happy with.  There's a couple of things that I don't like about it (you can see a couple of obvious dark circles in the middle of the grey that shouldn't be so dark).  I am not trying to be overly picky, but even in a photograph of my tattoo you can see these dark circles.  I thought I did my research when I went where I did for the tattoo I currently have, I met with a couple of different artists explaining what I wanted, but maybe I just went to the wrong person.

I want to find someone that does good black/grey work, maybe even portrait work since it's an important tattoo to me and since it's a handprint I want someone with good detailing experience.  I don't know if this is fixable or not, but I'd like to meet with someone who might have some ideas, I don't want to change the overall design of my tattoo since it's a handprint, but I'd like to find a solution to these dark black circles that are in it.

So...with that said, does anyone have any recommendations of local tattoo artists?

Also, I'm a complete germaphobe, so cleanliness is HUGE for me.  Not to say that tattoo places aren't careful, but I need to find one that I'm comfortable with, and one that will walk me through and show me their cleaning techniques step by step...just to avoid me having a panic attack...ha.

Thanks!

Re: Tattoo shop recommendations?

  • I am not sure where you are located, but I went to Brian at The Ink Factory in Hudson, WI (about 15 minutes from Woodbury). He is awesome.  I knew him from being a regular customer at my work, so I felt totally comfortable when the time came for me to get my tattoo done.  I think he would be more than happy to walk you through all of the cleaning techniques......we had a conversation about cleanliness and sanitary standards, so I know that it is important to him, and that he follows everything to a T.

I don't have a black/gray tattoo, but I do have a cover-up tattoo, and I swear, you cannot tell AT ALL that there was ever anything underneath my current tattoo....he did a FANTASTIC job. He has inked several of my co-workers as well, and everyone has been extremely happy with his work.  Below is a pic of the stencil before it was filled in...you can see my previous tattoo underneath the stencil.  There is also a picture of the finished product.

  • The Holy Mackerel in St. Paul. They were voted best tattoo shop in the Twin Cities (in the City Pages). I have been to Jake Patrin numerous times and he is awesome. I know right now he is booked until mid April, I am not sure about any of the other artists schedules but they all do great work. I have reffered so many friends there and they all love the finished product.

I'll check it out, thanks!  I'd rather wait a few months for an appointment to be with the right artist.

  • They're a little pricier, and definitely kind of a 'trend' place to go, but St Sabrina's in Uptown is really good.  I only thought to recommend them because the entire shop feels very bright and clean, and you mentioned that specifically :)  I've gotten a few piercings there, and they've been great.
  • Randall at Beloved Studios (Snelling and Como in St. Paul) is amazing. Until recently, he had his own shop (Visual Addiction) but he's in the process of moving to Beloved. His work is amazing -- I had him design a cover-up on my back, and though it's not B&W, he did a fantastic job.

This is pure speculation, but he may be charging a little less now that he's not in his own shop.
