Anyone know anything about West Clermont School District: The good the bad and the ugly - I will take any info you might have? For middle and high schools. TIA!
Re: School Question
IMO, from having worked with their special ed. programs, I am not a fan. I feel like the district is very quick to jump on the bandwagon of whatever trend is hot at the moment. I do have a friend (who's a teacher) with a child in the district. She was pleased with the schools up through high school. She has not been too impressed with the high school; her daughter is a freshman. I do know that the HS's are changing their structure between this year and next so maybe that will help. Previously, they had smaller "schools" ( sort of like majors- drama, science, technology, etc), but they are doing away with those.
I know that's not a huge help, but it's all I have. Good luck!
West Clermont is not doing away with small schools... it was a PR mistake with registrations for next year. I believe they are eliminating 1 or 2 of their "majors" but not all. I personally have a hard time with that angle of the small school concept.
Anyway, we currently live in West Clermont, and I have mixed feelings on the district. I think they're good, but I'm not sure they're the best place for my own kids. I know many people who are happy with them, but are they the best? I'm not convinced. I'm keeping an open mind as we may be using them for preschool next year. Time will tell, and as we experience the school district first hand we'll start making long term decisions.
I have worked with a handful of kids/families at Glen Este Middle and High Schools; all of them are in special ed. They have all been really happy with the schools, and I've seen Glen Este (at least the special ed people) go way above and beyond to make sure those kids all have what they need to be successful. I hear really good things about the new principal at GEHS, too. The bad/ugly, IMO, is that their anti-bullying crusade is a bit of a joke, and I think the small schools can be divisive - there are so many stereotypes about the kids in each program that keep them from socializing with each other, and even the core classes apparently can be very different depending on which program the class/teacher is part of. (This is what I hear from students, anyway.)
I think I would be comfortable with my kids going there, best or not. All schools are going to have pros and cons; if kids want to succeed, it largely depends on them, not their location. And West Clermont is a far cry from, say, some of the Cincinnati Public schools.
While I don't have specific information about WC schools, as a teacher I will say this-- a kid with an involved parent at a "mediocre" school will always fare better than a kid with an uninvolved parent at a "great" school.
That said, I'm sure you're child will receive a great education no matter where he/she goes. Uninvolved parents don't ask these kinds of questions on message boards.
