I have been making my own laundry soap fot at least a year if not longer. I make mine with arm&hammer. 20xmuleteam borax and oxyclean. I then grate a bar of fels napa and mix the whole thing with lots of boiling water.
2 questions...
1. If I continue to make it this way how do I feep it from seperating.
2. Does anyone have a dry mix that they use that works just as well?
Re: home made laundry soap
The first time I made mine, I must have done it just perfectly because it didn't separate at all.
The second and third batches were not as successful. I just shake before using it, and sometimes run hot water at the beginning of the fill cycle to make sure the soap dissolves before putting clothes in.
I have not tried a dry mix.
I made 2 types of dry mix with recipes I found online that included grated Fels Naptha. They cleaned well; but the soap did not dissolve well. I ended up having to mix it with boiling water and shaking for a minute before I added it to the wash. Pain in the rear!
So I tried adding dish soap instead of the Fels Naptha to the podwers ( 2 parts Washing Soda, 1 part Borax, 1 part Oxyclean, 1-2 Tbsp liquid soap per cup of powder mixture). It cleaned well, but the dish soap was too harsh and ended up stripping color out of the dark clothes. I think I will break down and buy some Dr. Bonners liquid soap (supposedly great) and try the recipe one more time. If I don't like that I will just give up on homemade soap. Feel free to try this with whatever liquid soap you like.
The best soap EVER! Even if you don't like it in the laundry soap you can use it for ANYTHING!
