foxes ?

How do I get rid of him... again?  We had one living under our shed last year, did a bunch of things and finally were able to block him out.  But then again today we found he got back in, which is pretty amazing since we really blocked things up (our shed looks like sh!t with all the crap we used to block him out).  Today, after DH not knowingly scared him out, the fox just stared at him/us trying to block him out again.  It was actually getting kind of scary watching this thing, not scared of us at all.  Makes me scared b/c we have 4 yr old and people around us have babies and little dogs.  We blocked him out again and he somehow was able to get back under and is not jsut staying there for now, which I even tried to sprinkle all sorts of spicey spices as a quick remedy befoer i ahd to leave for a bit.  We tried urine (pullups), sprayed water soaked with spices and garlic and blocked him, but nothing has worked.  Any other suggestions?  I am all for a not so nice method, but DH will not call his dad who can help us ;).  SO wondering if anyoe has ever done anything that has actually worked, we are desperate!  Thanks

Re: foxes ?

  • Was it this time last year, too? Mating season is mid-January to late-February, and they have a 53-day gestation period. Your fox "friend" may move on in another couple weeks if there are going to be any kits.

I checked this site when my neighbor and I spotted a fox in our adjoining yards over a couple of weeks during mating season -- http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/wildlife/living/living_with_foxes.htm -- bottom of the page has suggestions for making your property less attractive to foxes.

  • Good luck!

  • No it was not the same time as last year. last year was more towards the end of the summer.  We have tried some of those things listed on taht site too (looked up last year what to do and had similar things to do), nothing out that is tempting for them, etc.  It is so frustrating. I am going to try more things, but hopefully it is the case of mating season this time around and he doesn't decide we have a good home for him... which he has to be crazy to think so b/c we have been such horrible hosts to him.  ha!  He has jsut ruined our shed too, I would never think such a little guy would be able to rip apart a shed the way he has, both times.  Thanks for your help.

  • Normally foxes shy away from people. They're curious, and will check you/things out, but if you're loud they'll hide. If you can't scare him, then I'd look into getting a professional's help.

I hope that he's just "visiting" and will move on soon!!

For us, I think we'll be closing off underneath our deck this year, since we know it's a fond location for several different animals throughout the year: woodchucks, foxes, cats, etc. etc. I think we're going to either go the cinder-block route, or chicken-wire / fencing!!

Oh no!  we had one under our shed for a few days last year, too.  It was pretty scary!  We had no idea how to get him out either.  We tried to scare him away with loud noises, and it did not work.  We called the DEM for assistance and they were no help at all!  He/she eventually just went under the fence to the neighbor's yard, and we blocked it off with a big piece of wood... thankfully haven't seen it again since.  I hope your little friend leaves soon.  I was worried too because our son was 2 at the time and loves to be outside.
  • we had a pair under our shed last summer, they were here for weeks,   We called animal control and they came out but wouldn't do anything unless they were rabid and the as DEM told us to get them special cookies (yeah I was going to give them treats, didn't see that option a viable one)  or have DH  or any male urinate near there......they did finally go away but I couldn't let the kids or dog out for a while.
