Birthday Poll

I'm sure you ladies are sick of the birthday talk-but it's been on my mind, alot, lately :-)

We reserved a park by our house for the party. There is a shelter and the party will be at 3pm. Here are my questions:

Should we grill out or order pizza? We are having cupcakes-should we let them decorate their own or should they come done? (I'm just worried it will get messy if it's windy and we let them decorate)

Re: Birthday Poll

  • When we do mid-day parties, we do snacks: cheese and crackers, cut up fruit, little smokies, etc.. And since G is so little, I would probably just have the cupcakes decorated when you buy them and save the "let them decorate" fun for when she is old enough to participate.. Plus at a park my guess is the bigger kids will want to run around and play..

  • The only reason I was going to have food is because at all our family birthday parties they serve lunch or dinner. The party would be from 3-5/6. (We have a big family with lots of kiddos-so the first hour or so we'll just let everyone run around and play.

  • I would grill, but that's just because I love grilling! And, guys love manning grills, so I'm sure you'd have plenty of willing participants to cook the hot dogs and burgers while sipping on cold beverages.

  • We did grilling for our G's 1st birthday, but it was at my parents house w/ a gas grill, so it was easy.  I guess it was me, I wouldn't want to worry about grilling at a park, but if you have a ton of family there I am sure someone would be willing to help. This year we are grilling for Ingrid's party (again at my parents), but doing pizza at a park shelter for G's party.  I am going to make a bunch of apps too. We'll do pre-decorated cakes. I think that decorating there would be really messy, especially if it was warm/windy.

  • "knowing" you (ie. knowing your hands on capabilities through the nest and via angie), it seems like you want to do a little something extra...and i think this is more feasible through the snacks option.

additionally, grilling would create a lot of hands on work during the actual party and there are certain variables (weather, etc) that would impact your food...doing snacks would enable you to be more creative, have more options for guests (without going overboard), as well as being able to do all of the food ahead of time...leaving you to just set it out and be able to enjoy g's first birthday party without you, dh, or anyone else worried about cooking at the party itself.

if you are interested in easy/fun/cute snacks and appetizers, let me know - i have a lot in my arsenal. :)
