H has offered to buy me one for my birthday - we're not big on surprises around here lol. I've started looking into which one I may want...I'll admit I'm torn - I love the look of the Nook over the Kindle, but at the end of the day function is most important.
Initially I was just considering the original Nook, or the Kindle because I really like the anti glare screens (I definitely plan on using it outdoors a good bit during the summer time) - however I did notice that the NookColor has the anti glare screen protector available.
If you have one, which one do you have, and what made you choose that model?
If you want one, which would you purchase for yourself, and why?
Re: Anyone have an e-reader?
I didn't do a whole lot of homework to compare the different ones, but DH got me a Kindle for Christmas, and I love love love it. The way the "ink" looks is amazing. I wear glasses to read, and can sort of see without them but get a headache, and sometimes get a headache even with my glasses. But, with the Kindle, I've read for hours on end, even in low light (like a bedside lamp while DH sleeps) and haven't had an eyestrain headache yet. I absolutely recommend it!!
I've had a Kindle for a year and a half or so? I LOVE it. I really don't understand why someone would get an LCD/backlit ereader, but that's just my preference. If you want to get a backlit ereader, just buy a netbook or laptop. I know the Color Nook does like music and videos and pictures and stuff, but I have my iPhone (and laptop and camera, etc. haha) for that kind of stuff. I wanted my ereader to be just books.
When I read, I usually get sucked into the book and will read for like 6 hours straight. If I tried to do that on a computer screen, I'd have one massive migraine. I think it's almost easier on my eyes to read the Kindle than a paper book. I like that you can adjust the text size, too.
MissButters brought this up, too... but the only reason I'd consider getting something other than the Kindle is for the library checkout. But, realistically, I don't go to the library anyway.
It doesn't support the .epub format, but you can convert them if you get the file from someone. (I use Calibre.)
If you go to amazon and search 'kindle 0.00" or something like that, you'll get the whole list of free ebooks. Almost all of the classics are out there for free download (the copyright is long expired.)

I don't have one, but I've been in the market. I'm leaning towards the Nook or Sony Reader because they support more file types than the Kindle (I'm very interested in ePub for library books).
Before my brother quit his job at the Sony distributor, it would have been Sony hands down because I would have gotten a discount. Since that's off the table, I've been looking at other options, and the Nook looks promising.
I have the original nook for the same reasons Steph mentioned she has her Kindle. I wanted something that isn't backlit and would cause eye strain.
I like having the flexibility of .epub over the proprietary amazon format (not sure if this has changed?) but that was a big point for me when I was looking when the nook first came out.
I personally wouldn't get the nook color, again for the same reasons Steph mentioned. I already have a laptop and ipod to watch videos or read magazines online. I really just wanted the ereader for books, so the traditional form is fine with me.
