London Ladies

DH and I are planning a trip to London in June to celebrate the Queen's Birthday (yes, we are cheesy like that and yes, I know it isn't her actual birthday).  We fly in at about 9am and wanted to do an over-nighter outside of London and come back the following evening.  We are planning to travel by train so something accessible by train is key.  We were thinking of Bath or Cardiff, but I wanted to see if you ladies had any suggestions for places to visit for a day/overnight.

Any suggestions or advice would be awesome!  Thanks.

Re: London Ladies

  • I'm probably one of the worst for this, since we've been horrible about getting to places outside of London, but I'll throw in my two cents.  I don't know much about Cardiff, but Bath is a definite possibility.  A great small town, and it's close to the Cotswolds if you want to spend some time there.

A few other options could be Oxford or Cambridge.  Both possible for just a day trip, but nice to do with an overnight so you can take your time.  And easily accessible by train.

Brighton has also been recommended to me, although some people don't like it.  It's on the south coast, and I think is a small beach town.  I think just over an hour from London by train.

York is supposed to be nice, but I haven't looked into it much yet.

Lake District and Cornwall are both on my list of places to go, but probably better as a long weekend.

Sorry I couldn't provide much more info, but hope this helps some.  Sorry to post and run, but we're in Oz right now and I'm just checking in quickly.

  • I vote for hitting up Hampton Court on a tour with London Walks. I love that company. Bath is a great option as well.
  • Do York. Oh my goodness do York. It's one of my favourite places in the world and even if you're just going for a day or so there's quite a few things to do (the wall-walks, ghost walk at the Minster, the Shambles, The Golden Fleece, museums etc.) it's so great. Seriously.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, ladies!  It seems that as I continue to research I add places to the list of possibilities instead of narrowing it down.  York has definitely been added to the list, we're suckers for a good walled city and ghosts. We would love to do the Cotswolds but it doesn't look like it will work for this trip.

Alyson, thanks for the link, they look like they have a ton of great tours and ideas.  We are still have the day after Trooping the Colour free so we may plan something through them!

Thanks again for all the suggestions!

I second these walks!  They're only a few hours and a great way to see different areas of the city. And you don't have to book in advance.

And Hampton Court is fabulous as well, if you have time.
