Nook Color OR Kindle?

For one of H's birthday gifts (the big one) I'm thinking of getting him either the Nook or Kindle.

He's been reading a ton on the train to work, and keeps buying brewing books, has magazines, etc.

Kindle seems to be faster from the reviews I've read and is good in the sun b/c of the black and white...and you can get wifi on one of the versions...what else?

The Nook color seems to have a ton of additional features like music, ability to surf and check email,  pictures, etc...kind of seems like an ipad sort of, minus 250 dollars...which I do not have right now...thanks Uncle Sam!

Since the Nook color is about 100 more dollars than the Kindle, convince me one way or the other.

Things to know about MH: He will buy maybe a new book 1 a month if it is a learn to/how to on a hobby, or 1-2 a month if it is just for fun book. He has an ESPN, Beer Advocate, and I was thinking of getting him another magazine subscription. He likes browsing the internet and being "mobile." He is upgrading his phone soon to either the IPhone on Verizon (if it has the 4G this summer...I don't know anything about this, FWIW), or another smart phone type of phone this summer.

Re: Nook Color OR Kindle?

  • So, this isn't exactly "techie" advice, but my dad just got the Nook color for his birthday.  He actually did all of the research and picked that one (he will research a purchase to death before buying anything).  I'm seeing him tonight and can pick his brain, if you want me to.
  • I love my Nook, I don't have the color, I have the B&W, I like the e-ink better for reading books.  But for magazines and other things, I think the color is the better way to go.
  • I have the Kindle, although I'll be honest - haven't had a lot of time to play around with it.  It downloads books lightening speed fast, but maybe they all do.  If he plans on getting the iPhone soon, he could use that for his internet and then go cheaper on your e-reader?

  • I have the kindle and love it.  I have a couple websites that tell me the free books to DL from Amazon.  I have over 250 books and have paid for 1.

With that being said, the one and only thing I don't like is it does not have the software to be compatible to "rent" books from the library.  My school district has a digital library and I have to DL them on my phone because my kindle doesn't support that.  However, the new version might.  Mine is the older version.

So, that's my only complaint.  I love my kindle. I read it every night.  I would recommend a protective screen (like they have for phones) and a cover.

That site has some cool ones and I love the illuminator light for reading at night.  The kindle does not have a backlit screen so you have to have a light to read at night.

Not sure if that helps or not...

  • [I don't have either.] Since he does plan on getting a smart phone soon, the internet features of the Nook would be redundant. So as I see it, it comes down to two things:

1 - The Nook color would be better for magazines because it's nice to see those things in color.

2 - The Kindle would be better for books because reading it is easier on the eyes.

I think I'd go with the Kindle.

ETA: I would love the Nook Color for children's books when we move to Kenya. We have so many books that Nate and I love, but we won't be able to take very many.

  • I bought H the original Nook ( B&W ) - he loves it, I offered to upgrade him to the color but declined it.

He really likes just color, he only reads books on there, not magazines.

  • I have the Kindle and I love it.  I've had it for about 2.5 years now and I've had no problems with it whatsoever.

I know nothing about the Nook so I'm not much help there, but I can tell you I've had a good Kindle experience.
