Today I planted kohlrabi, collards, buttercrunch lettuce, and spinach in a 4x4 square foot garden. This is my first time planting anything ever, so I really hope I end up with some veggies. I used miracle grow garden soil and topped with about an inch of mushroom compost (a friend recommended and I didn't read up on it until now, and see that it can have too much salt for some types of seeds to germinate). I also understand that it's a little late to be planting some of these in my area, so hopefully they won't bolt in the heat.
So on to my question. I plan to do more spring planting, and I love, love, love brussels sprouts. I already bought the seeds. However, I'm reading about the spacing, and some people say that the plants are too big for a SFG.
Has anyone tried planting 1 brussels sprout plant per square foot? What were your results?
Re: Started planting! And brussels sprouts question
I've had no luck with brussel sprouts. I feel like maybe they aren't supposed to grow in the south.
Your lettuce and spinach will probably be fine as long as summer doesn't decide to show up April 1 this year but we ease into it.
You can probably start planting summer crops like zucchini and tomatoes.
