Mac vs PC?

So I have pretty much decided that if I cannot yell loud enough for HP to fix my laptop for free (since it is their fault) then I need to get a new laptop. BIL works for Apple and said he can get me a 15% discount on a Macbook if I want it or I could stay with a PC. I had a mac desktop in college and it was nice. My HP I got through Costco and got a really good deal on it plus I got the Costco warranty which gave me an extra year of free service on it.

What are your thoughts? I am interested to hear from both PC and Mac users.

Re: Mac vs PC?

  • I have a PC, but plan on purchasing a mac for my next laptop. I don't know an unhappy mac user!

  • I made the switch and am VERY happy!  I can do everything on the mac faster and more easily than on the PC (and I have to switch back and forth because I use a PC at work so I don't have to use my personal computer to project for the class)  Even with PowerPoint, I can imbed videos and copy/paste images (can't do that on the PC)  I can use iPhoto to easily download and manage photos.  I can use iMovie to easily splice together Q's movie clips.
  • I use both.  My personal computer is a Mac and my work computers are PCs.  While the Macs are pretty, I began to get annoyed when stuff didn't work on the Mac.  And there are always the compatibilty issues.  So I almost always use my work laptop.

For example, when the new Mac OS came out, some of my old software wouldn't work on the update.  But I guess Mac users aren't a big enough group for certain software producers to care and Apple isn't big enough to test all major software on their new OS updates like Microsoft does.

And then little things don't work on Macs -- like certain email syncing stuff, IKEA's kitchen planner, McKinsey's online internship application, some statistical software packages, etc.

And I give a fair number of talks, and they always seem to be set up with a PC and there are always little compatibility issues with the Mac PowerPoint to Windows PowerPoint, so then I always make sure I use my PC to make PowerPoints (or have to bring my computer but sometimes they don't like having to switch the computer attached to the projector).

So, a bunch of annoying things have led me to give up my pretty Mac and just go with the PC...

  • I have a PC laptop and my DH has a Mac laptop. At work, I also use a PC. After using his Mac for the past year or so, I want one! It just seems like a smarter machine, if that makes sense, and a lot of things are simpler and more user friendly than on my PC. When it comes time to get a new computer, I'm definitely getting a Mac.
  • For me, hands down, MAC all the way!  Just know, that this is coming from a gal who has grown up with every version of a Mac since the Apple 2E so I am a bit biased!!  Smile

    {and, fwiw, I switch between my Mac and PC all the time (word, excel, powerpoint, etc) and do not have any additional formatting issues than are the norm when you switch from one computer to the next using the same operating system (ie, PC to PC).}

  • I love all things Apple, but my office is primarily PC based. So sometimes capability issues occur. (IE our calendar program is PC only...)

Office isn't fantastic on Apple. (Still trying to figure out the quirks.) But I love everything else about them.

I've had as many, if not more, issues with Microsoft...going from Win98 to WindowsME to Windows 2000 to Windows Vista...all have brought major issues with my files and programs.  I'm having less issues with older files on my mac right now than on my new PC

agreed.  It's always really nice to still have some PC access.  More and more is being built Mac compatible though.

after some frustration, I've learned what the PC compatibility issues are

Really?  I have a MUCH easier time with Office on the Mac than on the PC...I've had a really frustrating time transitioning to the new Office 07
  • I currently have a Mac laptop, but I've used PC's all my life. DH is an in-home computer tech, comfortable with both. What it comes down to, really, is that Macs are great computers. There are also great PC computers. Macs are just more expensive. If you can get a deal on a Mac for the same price as you can a decent PC, I say go for it. Macs are definitely prettier. I haven't seen much difference with the ease of speed or programs between the two. Although, if you have specific programs for the PC, they won't work for your Mac.

  • Mac. We have a macpro (desktop) and it's got Windows on it so Husband can work remotely...but I NEVER switch over to it. Mac is intuitive and I have never had an issue.

For customer service: they have the geniuses at the store. When my sister did something to her laptop that erased her ilife (iphoto, itunes, imovie, garage band, etc) she took it in and they couldn't restore it so they upgraded it for free. It's not a "Free with computer" purchase, so they basically gave her a $100(ish) upgrade for *** up her computer.

Also - if you're a student or teacher you can get discounts on your hard/software.

I have issues with Mail Merged docs going all wonky. And MacOffice seems to keep things well hidden, where I'll easily spend 10 minutes looking for something. Though - I do the same thing on the PC version.

I'm just happy that it's working now. For a while there, I couldn't get Office 08 to even LOAD on my Macbook.

Worst case scenario - get a core duo laptop, fire up Bootcamp, and install a copy of Windows on your Mac. That's what I did.

  • I use a PC at work, but all of our personal use computer devises are Mac, and they will never not be.  I truly believe mac computers, software, and customer service is superior.

We do have Office for our Macs, but only b/c it was offered for $20 through my work.  I wouldn't pay the $200+ for the package though unless I absolutely had to use my home computer for work documents and needed the continuity of Office from one to the other, reason being that the spreadsheet and word processing programs that come standard on Macs is just as good (arguabley better) than Office products anyway.  Because I'm so familiar with Office, and b/c it was so cheap for us to have, I do tend to use it on my mac, but it's not a necessity for someone who doesn't need to do a lot of back and forth between mac & pc, IMHO.

Like PP's have said, I've never met an unhappy mac user.

And Apple customer service is second to NONE.

  • LOL.  It sounds like I'm the only unhappy Mac person on this board!

Ahhh.. Yet another thing we are soul sisters on. I knew I liked you for some reason. ;)

  • I'm on my second mac and I absolutely love it. Took some time to get used to, and I'm still not convinced that I'm as proficient in it as I was a PC, but I have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less problems with it. The number of times I had something wrong was once (it was a physical part that died and needed to be replaced, nothing wrong with the operating system, no virus, etc.) and DH fixed it on his own. I miss the right click mouse, but I'll never go back, ever.

You can buy one.  I've gotten so used to command clicking that I get confused with a right click button anymore!

Is it the mac made one or is there another one? I've heard bad reviews about it (that the right click stopped working pretty quickly).

You don't have to use a mac made mouse with a mac.  We use a regular (right, left, middle-wheel) mouse with ours for some things (mainly AutoCAD) and have had no problems.
