Best Swiss/Rainbow Chard Weather Conditions?

I live in Houston, TX & I've got a few veggies growing on my patio. Today at Whole Foods I saw a big table full of rainbow & swiss chard plants & they looked gorgeous, so I was tempted to get a few. I love swiss chard & I cook with it all the time. I was just under the impression that it's a winter crop & grows best in cold weather. Is this true? Or can it survive in the hot dry summers of south Texas?

Any input would be greatly appreciated! :)

Re: Best Swiss/Rainbow Chard Weather Conditions?

  • they are a winter season plant in Texas. They won't survive in the heat.

As much as I love having a longer growing season in the south, I miss being able to grow things like parsnips, chard and brussel sprouts
