Talk to me about weaning and kicking the bottle....

So the last few weeks I've been working on weaning K from the boob and from bottles. I am finally successfully able to get through a day without nursing. Right now we only nurse first thing in the AM, one dinnerish session (sometimes), and one at bedtime. I don't mind continuing the BF... but I wanted to be DONE with pumping by the time I started my new job. I know this process with probably take longer since we totally threw her for a loop by moving. She'll drink water out of a NUBY straw cup... But getting her to drink milk out of it is a struggle. So what do I do? Just keep at bottles and try in a few weeks when we are back into a routine? Or just keep trying her milk in a straw cup and don't cave and give bottles? She's pretty stubborn...and I'm worried because she is so small .. I'd hate to have her miss out on any feedings. Besides all this she is fussy because of teething! Any advice? Or tell me about your experience...

  • When I moved Kevin off the bottle I switched him to the NUBY sippy cup. It was the only one that worked for us.  So I don't have any real help. but he took to this very easy then it was another transition in about a year when we wanted him off of this but it worked to get us out of the bottles. image

This may be the route we will have to go.... K was a BIG time comfort nurser.... So I don't think she gets the same 'comfort' suck outta the straw cup.... I have so many friends who just went straight to straw cups with no problems. Every baby has their own preferences I guess!

  • I'm getting ready to wean off the bottle too. We switched her over to 100% whole milk last week and I wanted to get her used to that transition before weaning her off the bottle so we aren't throwing too many changes at her at once. She drinks water through a straw sippy but she's isn't great with it, nor with any other sippy cup, so I think we may have a hard time with her.

  • Ditto the Nuk cup. Ours looks a lil different then the one August posted. I didn't realize but it is called a transition cup. The spout is similar to a bottle. A will only drink milk out of this cup! I just went out and bought ones with a hard spout today. Lol. As for the transition, I was the one holding onto the bottles. My DH actually was able to nix the bottle. I was working nights and he basically would only offer the sippy. In the beginning I tried to offer milk the same as formula (every 4 hrs). But eventually it turned into twice a day! GL!!!!

  • I'm a big fan of just doing all changes at once.  I personally wouldn't get K settled into a new routine then change something else.  But that's just me.

I stopped all but the night time bottle cold turkey.  I went right to the Gerber spouted cups for milk and straw cups for water.  I cut out the bedtime bottle when she was 13 months old. K was a comfort sipper (i stopped nursing when she was 6 weeks old because of work) and would wake up just to suck on a bottle (and wouldn't take a pacifer!)  I had to just let her cry at night or switch the bottle to water.

    Good luck.

  • We're still working on it and started later than a year since I nursed until G was 13 months.  He just started straw sippys for water two weeks ago and now we're working on getting him to take milk in sippies.  At this point he is doing daytime milk from sippies and early morning and nighttime milk from the bottle. I'm not worried about it and am confident he won't go to college drinking from a bottle ;-)
