Sending me to training classes - WWYD?

I've been at my current position for just over two months now, and I hate it. Aside from the fact my skill sets just don't translate well and I am not at all a good fit (and my boss seems to agree), I also don't seem to fit in very well with the majority of the other employees (for example, I got snarked at so bad a couple times that HR even got involved--this has never happened to me before!). I dread going to work, and while I was hoping it would get better, it has gotten worse if anything. I've been looking for a new job and have gone on a couple interviews, but nothing has happened so far.

Anyway, my boss took the initiative about a month ago to sign me up for $1700 worth of training--three classes total. I've been through one, and I have the second coming up this week, and the final one in the second week of April. I did not ask for these classes, nor was I given an option of taking them. I checked the employee manual, and it doesn't look like I'll have to pay back the money if I leave (I know some companies have a policy that if the employee leaves before a certain time period, they have to pay the cost of the classes back), but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. However, I know that if I go through all this training and then leave, I'm going to seriously piss off a few people.

Right now I'm just keeping quiet and going with the flow. But part of me is wondering if I should just be honest and let my boss know that he should cancel the training sessions because I really am not out to screw anyone over (nor am I wanting to potentially screw myself over and have to pay back these classes because I can't afford that). But at the same time there's obviously that chance that he'll ask me to leave immediately, and I don't think that's the best option for me either. We could make it work financially, but it's far from ideal.

What would you do? A note: While these classes might help me in this position so that the skill set problem would be at least less of an issue, I'm still so miserable with all the other aspects of the job and company that I have absolutely no intention of staying in this job any longer than I have to.

  • Take the classes.  You dont' know how long you're going to be there - do what you can to at least make one aspect of your job better. 

    And as HR has gotten involved, if they did try to claim you had to pay them back, I think you'd have a bit of an arguement as to why you left so soon.

  • Generally speaking, your employer would have a very difficult time withholding money from your cheque unless they've had you sign something to the effect that you'd repay.  I agree, take the classes, you never know how long you might be stuck there.
