Breast Feeding Moms

Quick question about birth control.  Are any of you on the pill?  They put me on the "mini pill" (generic version of Errin I think) and I have noticed recently a dip in my milk supply.  I had more then enough previously and would pump like 8-10oz in 5 minutes.  I have  3 months of stock pile frozen and could probably feed him for a month if I never pumped again.  Now I am pumping around 5-7.  I am still getting enough to cover his daily bottles so it may just be my bottle evening out or something, but was wondering if this happened to anyone else?

I know there are other boards that might be better to help me, but I don't post on any of them and I also know I can trust you girls :)

Re: Breast Feeding Moms

  • Dang Girl! You have some good output! I'm jealous! I take fenugreek and eat oatmeal and never get that much unless it has been a really long time since I pumped!

I'm no help 'cause I never started on the mini pill since I refuse to ever go on the pill again. Your supply could very well just be regulating though.

Sarah S and Heather are super knowledgable about this things so you came to a good place.

  • Paige, I definitely have been lucky in my supply!  And I know that I am still producing plenty, but to me it is a definite drop from where I was.  My poor SIL pumps for 30 minutes and only gets a couple of ounces.  She is very jealous!
  • Wow, you have some awesome output! I don't even get close to that, but it sounds like you are regulating to what your LO actually eats. I don't think it is the mini-pill having any effect.

The bold part.  It may just be coincidence that you started the mini pill at the same time.  I can't speak from experience on the pill, as I'm not on hormonal BC, but I did notice that I began to lose my oversupply gradually around the 4mo mark up until we started on solids at 6 mo.  I pumped extra from when I went back to work at 9 1/2 weeks until she was around 4mo, so that I was able to add to my freezer stash each week.  Then, I started only being able to pump what DD was eating up until she was about 5 1/2 mo when she peaked with her milk intake and for a couple weeks I was maybe an oz or two short.  I had a freezer stash to back me up and soon after, we started solids and her milk intake went down again, so it wasn't a big deal.  I still stress about supply a year later and I have absolutely no reason to.  I will say that the older LO gets, the less I pump...so if that happens to you, don't panic!  I used to get 10-15 oz a day and now I get 4oz whether I do one or two pump sessions.

  • Thank you Heather!  We are actually probably starting on cereal this week as it is something we are discussing at his appointment tomorrow.

And pumping less I have noticed can probably happen to.  I used to be so engorged or close to leaking every like 3 hours that I would have to.  Not if I go to pump after 4 hours or so I don't feel full at all...although I pump at lease 5oz anyway.  Also most of my supply comes from one side.  The other side has always pumped like 2-3 oz no matter what.  It is funny how much they vary.

  • I pretty much average 3.5-4oz per breast per session any more. At my peak I would get 5oz per side. I am down to pumpinh 3x a day but I also EP. We have started having to use a bit more of my stash but we will be starting Maddy on whole milk soon.

I agree with Heather that my supply really regulated between 3-4 months and I lost that overly engorged all the time and leaking feeling. My only issue has been with AF and my supply will usually dip at that time.

  • the mini pill shouldn't effect your supply , Lucas is 4 mo now right? I know your supply can start to regulate more to the baby in the 4-6 mo range I believe.

I have  strong feeling that it may be your body gearing up for AF (have you gotten one yet?) some women (like me ) experience a dip from O to AF, others have it just as AF arrives for a few days.

It is a royal pain and seems to get worse every month but you can combat it with taking Ca/Mg/Zinc pills daily (this is what has worked the best for me ) and mothers milk pills (oatmeal, beer as well).

But if you think it is the pill you could always stop taking it and see.

Let me know if you have more questions

No I have not had one yet.  Not that I am complaining.  Over a year without a period has been kind of nice.  Aaccording to my pill pack I just started week 2 of 4.
