i hired an accounting firm to do my taxes (not a cheap one, either). i sent all my information and didn't get confirmation that it was received (me having my own business, i think good customer service would have been to acknowledge receipt of the materials, but whatevs). then i got emails from 4 different people about my returns. annoying. who am i supposed to be talking to?
finally i got an several different emails from a guy with like 6 different questions and i asked him if he was my contact, and he said yes. i needed to talk over all these things with him on the phone, instead of email, so i asked him when we could set up an appointment to talk on the phone. i like to set times for phone calls. i find people are more prepared and it helps to avoid phone tag.
i called at the set time and he wasn't at his desk. fine. i expected him to call within minutes but he didn't call until several hours later. when he did call, he didn't apologize and it was clear english is not his first language. i'm not trying to be rude to foreigners, at all, i have a lot of friends who are not american, but when it comes to something that is already confusing, i'm not excited to work with someone who doesn't speak great english.
today i emailed him and said "Is there a time when you know you'll be at your desk so we can talk? I called on Friday at our appointment time but you weren't there." he emailed back and said he WAS there.
now i'm just annoyed and i don't want to work with him.
Re: i'm annoyed
ok that's really annoying. i would contact someone else at the company (a manager/owner?) and tell them what's up. i wouldn't mention the ethnicity thing...that might turn them off and make them think you're bigoted and you're not. i understand waht you're saying. you need CLEAR answers. plus, his responses to you are uncalled for. since i work in the customer service industry as well for catering, i take my appts seriously. i don't miss them and if i had to, i would call and apologize like a million times.
i think you have every right to work with someone else.
I agree with bucks, ask for a manager or supervisor.
In this case the fact that English isn't his first language isn't the pressing problem. You have scheduled times to call to discuss your taxes, and he's not taking your calls. That's not professional, and is really frustrating for you.
I'd be wanting to work with someone else too.

Didn't you have issues with your accounting firm earlier in the year? Or did I make that up?
I'd ask to speak to someone above him. Get your taxes straighted out and then get a new accounting firm.
oh yeah, definitely you have the right to ask to work with someone else. granted this time of year is busy for accountants, but you are still the customer and even if it was an emergency (bathrm break - whatever the case) he still shouldn't have responded the way he did with "I was here".
Okay, well, then that's even more rude...you were there, so what....were you just blatently avoiding my call?!?
You're not being irrational at all!

So did I completely make up you having issues with your accounting firm earlier this year?!?!
oops! sorry, meant to respond. YES, that was me. this is the new firm after i ditched the other one. i'm literally paying them three times what i paid the old firm to prepare my taxes, so that's why i expect more!!!
OK! I'm not going crazy. Man you are just not meant to have good cutsomer service from accounting firms!! I hope they get their act together and earn their money.
