H and I are in the market for a new mattress

I suggested it last year but H really only got on board with idea recently. Our mattress is a hand-me-down and at least 10 years old. Not totally uncomfortable but still not as comfy as we would want. Just started to look for a new one. Exploring all options. We have a queen-sized bed and have a frame that doesn't require a boxspring. Budget isn't much of an option. Any recommendations for mattresses? Any recommendations for places to buy? Would love to hear about any and all good/bad experiences that you've had.

Re: H and I are in the market for a new mattress

  • We got a Simmons Black Beauty (or something like that) this winter and we love it. We just went up to Macy's when they were having a big sale. They price match, so we felt pretty good about it. We are loving our new mattress. DH doesn't flop around any more and if he does, I barely register it.

  • Ooh, i'd be interested to hear everyone's suggestions too cuz DH and i are *also* thinking about a new mattress!! Ours was a gift from the ILs but we didn't pick it out and it is way bouncy! So is our box-spring...anytime either one of us rolls over, the other one feels it. :( And my back is killing me cuz i have scoliosis and this bed isn't very supportive.

We had a friend recently buy a mattress from the Sleepy's on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights and he had a pretty good experience there. We may go that route...

Good luck with the shopping Amy!!

  • We did Sleepy's and paid more than I usually would $1000+. It's a pillow top with sleep numbers. My husband is a big guy that likes a firm matress, I am more of a medium. I'm still sleeping through the night and pregnant, so it must be good.

  • i've bought beds from both macy's and sleepy's, and have no complaints about either.  both had free delivery and removal of the old mattress, which was nice.

my mattress from macy's was a sealy latex foam (spring-free) mattress.  i really liked that bed.  the only reason we got rid of it is because i bought it when i was single, and so it was only full sized.  my DH and i are waaaaay too big to share one of those!  now, my mom has it in her master bedroom, and she loves it.

our current mattress is from sleepy's, and it's a king sized tempur-pedic.  there is seriously nothing like this bed.  i look forward to getting into it every. single. night.  tempur-pedics are definitely stiff when you first get them, and can be more firm in colder weather.  HOWEVER, they soften up considerably within the first month of sleeping on them, and as for the cold weather firmness, that takes literally moments of your body heat to change.

i have 4 herniated discs and a fractured vertebrae, so a proper mattress is especially important to my health, and i can safely say that we will never, ever buy anything other than a tempur-pedic ever again.

  • This thread is really interesting! We've had the same mattress for 7 years now and I would love a King, so I am also looking forward to reading all the responses.

I'm curious, one of the chief complaints that I've heard about Tempurpedic style mattresses is that they retain your body heat and eventually get very hot in the middle of the night, making some people very uncomfortable. Have you experienced anything like that?

  • We got a Simmons from Sleepy's a few years ago, I can't remember what style but we love it.  We spent a lot of time just lounging around on it in the mattress store before we finally bought it.  Dealing with Sleepy's was fine, nothing spectacular, but no problems either.  One thing I will say is that we didn't haggle price at all, and apparently you should.  My dad told us after the fact that it's like buying a car, you should always make them go at least a little lower.

nope.  really, it's all about the sheets.  in our old house, we had no control over the heat as it was a rental, and it tended to run REALLY warm.  we found that a nice set of cool percale sheets did the trick.  our new home runs pretty cool, and so we only use the percales in the summer now.

and i say this as a person whose body temp runs naturally runs cold, but with a husband who runs waaaaaaaaay hot.  and he has never had a heat complaint with our bed, even with that natural tendency.

  • We got our mattress from Sleepy's 3 + years ago, so I don't remember exactly what it is and DH is sleeping, so I think it may be rude of me to wake him up and pull the sheet up so I can see. lol But, I will say that I love it and it was worth every penny of the $1000 bucks we spent on it. It's not super soft or super hard...it's just right! I will look tomorrow and let you know exactly what it is.

  • ohhh, us too! we are *thinking* about a new mattress as well as new bed frame. I would love to get a tempurpedic - DH has the pillow and i love to steal it when he's not home.

  • We had a Tempurpedic and I hated it.  It absolutely retained body heat and I'd wake up BOILING in the night.  Also, it lost its firmness over time and got "body impressions".  Not to mention that it weighs a ton, so if you want to rotate it, you really need two people.

Stupidly, our next mattress was a plush Euro top Sealy.  Like heaven for the first few months, and now body impressions.

I got an Ikea "Sultan" mattress for DD#1's bed and I just love it.  Super comfy and great support.  I think our next mattress will be that.

any mattress that does not have springs is, eventually, going to have body impressions.  if the sultan mattress doesn't yet, it is because your DD is much lighter than an adult!

  • Thanks for all the advice, ladies.  H did some more research and on Monday we went to Room & Board to test out a few mattresses.  We started there because we have bought furniture there before and loved the service. We both liked the mattresses, especially their memory foam version. Plus, they have a couple of "natural" mattress options.  I think one thing we like about their products is that they are American-made and we've loved the quality for the stuff we've purchased so far.

We, no doubt, will make trips to Macy's and maybe Sleepy's and do a little more investigating.
