Daycare WWYD?

I am looking at daycare options for baby-to-be. I live in Saylor Twp and I work in WDM. My husband works in Ames.  I was originally looking at daycare options in Ankeny. Now, the more I think about it, I'm wondering if WDM or Waukee would be better.  Would you rather have daycare near your home or near your work?  Any opinions are appreciated!

Re: Daycare WWYD?

  • Well, where is your pediatrician located?

For most appointments, you'll leave work to pick up the baby from daycare, go to the pedi, and drop back off at daycare.  If you work in WDM and pedi is in WDM it would only make sense for the daycare to be there.

My daycare is in Urbandale and we live in Urbandale.  But I work in WDM and my pedi is in WDM.  But work and daycare are about 5-10 minutes from me so it's kind of a non-issue either way.  Just something to think about though :)

Eek. I hadn't thought of that. I don't have a pedi picked yet, but was planning on giong in Ankeny...again, close to home.  Maybe I should reconsider that.  I feel a little unprepared and a lot overwhelmed with all these decisions!!

  • Aww don't get too overwhelmed!  You still have time and you're doing GREAT!  Besides, it's not a terrible distance either way.

I would interview daycares in both locations and go with your gut.  15 minutes of drive time is NOTHING compared to the satisfaction of having a daycare you love and trust :)

  • We decided to pick a daycare close to home in case one of us was sick, out of town, etc. We work on opposite sides of the city, so we wanted some place centrally located. This was more of an issue for us because we live north of Dallas and work in Dallas. It takes forever to get anywhere in this city!!! And Molly made a good point about being close to the pedi!

  • I take Wesley to Boone (where I work). We live and DH works in Ames. It isn't normally a pain, but it can be when DH needs to pick him up or a couple of weeks ago when I was sick. I originally leaned towards having him in the same town as me so I could nurse him on my break. I like knowing I am minutes away all the time.

That said, I am with Molly- driving a little extra is worth it if your gut says you want your child in a certain day care.  Look both places and go with what feels right!

  • We live in Beaverdale, I work in Waukee, DH works in Urbandale, LO goes to daycare in Clive. As crazy as that sounds my work/ daycare are only about 5 minutes apart and  shes never at daycare unless Im at work  I have been really happy about having Lyla close to me since on more than one occasion shes gotten sick and had to be picked up asap. I can also stop in if I get a break at work and play with her as the daycare has an open door policy. With all that said the reason shes at the daycare shes at is because its the one I liked the most.
  • We live in Ankeny, I work in Des Moines, my husband works in Ames, and our kids go to daycare in Ankeny. We went this route because a) the pediatrician location; b) in the event I had to work late or travel, it would be a pain for DH to drive all the way from Ames to DM for the kids; and c) I didn't want the kids in the car for longer than necessary, especially on the interstate during rush hours. No regrets, this arrangement works well for us. Good luck whatever you decide!

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.
  • I think location close to home is key. My husband and I also work in opposite directions and we both do drop-offs and it is nice because it is on the way for both of us. It is also nice because sometimes I take him even on days I don't work! Surprise
