Question of the day

If you could teach anything, what would it be?

Re: Question of the day

  • Ummm probably physical science, physics, astronomy, and forensic science.  Oh wait!!!  I already do teach all that!!!!  It really depends on the lesson/unit which is my favorite to teach each day. Currently I am loving teaching my physics class because we are learning about Fluids (buoyancy, pressure, flow, etc) which I find fascinating mostly because of the magnitude of practical applications.

I used to teach anatomy, which was hard the first few years, but I loved teaching it and I miss it now.

    I would teach art.

Toss the kids some crayons, pencils, paint and markers and tell them to make the most obnoxious thing EVER.

    It'd be awesome.

  • I'd go for teaching teenage girls common sense things that don't get covered elsewhere. For example:

    1. Wearing skanky clothing at 15 *will* get you a guy, but won't keep one.  Instead you are likely to have a revolving door of them.
    2.  Makeup - less is more.  Unless you're goth (which is okay) blondes should not wear 4 layers of mascara and huge amounts of black eyeliner.
    3.  Personal finance - let's calculate the amount of $ you'll make over your lifetime with a college education, as opposed to if you get knocked up in high school and drop out.  Also, let's calculate the amount of interest you'll pay if you get into $20K of credit card debt.
    4.  Boys generally want to have sex with you.  What does a boy mean if he says "he really likes you and wants to mess around, but doesn't want to be your boyfriend?" He wants to have sex with you without a commitment.

I think a class on this might have girls better set up for life, and be rewarding that they might learn something that shapes their life.

  • I would teach music which I already do!  If I had a choice on the age group I would prefer the older kids doing either vocal or instrumental.

You took the words right out of my mouth!!

  • Either English, American Literature, or Creative Writing, all at the high school level. Side note: my original intended major was high school Creative Writing, but the DA's (dumb@sses, not dean's assistants) at Purdue kept trying to place me into the wrong stuff, which my SAT scores weren't high enough to get into. Morons.
  • Costume history at high school or college level. Its amazing how much clothes are indicative of social and economic changes and the relationship between clothes and history is something I have always found really fascinating.

  • Well since my job is a social studies I'd probably go with history-but I wouldn't mind teaching earlier American history than 20th century if I could have the older kids, and I really do love my Civics and oddly Economics classes-in which I try to instill in them the debt on credit cards and the value of finishing school before getting KU...although I would love to teach quilting and cooking, just not all the other family and consumer sciences stuff too

  • I'm with Kenna. I'd also like to teach girls that the models/actresses in the magazines are usually airbrushed and they have the same insecurities we do. I'd like to teach teen girls that they are all beautiful no matter what size or shape.

The first time I went to college this was actually a huge interest of mine...wrote papers on anorexia, self esteem, etc.

  • I already teach.  I am starting to wonder if it is really what I want to do.  I guess I would pick teaching

  • While the idea of teaching makes me simultaneously break out in hives and have a grand-scale panic attack, I commend those who are so much stronger than me.  You really do a great service.

That said, if I had to teach something, I would teach the art of living without bulllsh*tting oneself.  Too many people have no idea how to take personal accountability for things these days, and spend most of their time blaming others for the things going wrong in their own lives.

Yep, I'm just a ball of freaking sunshine today, huh?

  • Honestly? I have no freaking clue. haha.

Maybe that is why I don't want to be a mother. I can't teach anything! haha.

    Kenna! Good answer!
