A few weeks back, I posted about how I was having trouble with adult acne... I went to the dermatologist, who prescribed a sulfer wash and retin-a, but I have noticed that my skin is breaking out more. I have read some info that retin-a can often make you break out before it clears everything, basically making everything worse before it makes it better. Has anyone had any similar experiences? Thanks girls!
Re: Any retin-a users?
Yes your skin gets worse before it gets better.
Here are some tips that helped me:
1. Wait at least 20 mins after washing your face to apply it. I usually shower then don't apply the Retin A until right before bed.
2. Use it sparingly. Every night is way too much for me, 2-3 nights a week is good enough for me.
3. Make friends with sunblock.
4. Use a good moisturizer during the day. I use Oil of Olay but will be checking out some other brands when this bottle runs out.
5. Give the sulfur wash a break. I use Purpose most washes since it is so gentle.
Thanks!! I use the Olay moisturizer... it is like gold. But I also use Bare Minerals moisturizer, I think its called Rare Minerals, which is wonderful too. Thanks for the tips though! My doctor said to use the sulfur wash for about 2 months morning/night then switch to just AM and replace the PM wash with the purpose, which do you use the bar or the bottle wash? Just wondering which one is better.
I use the Purpose liquid pump bottle.
I also have the DDF glycolic acid wash but don't use that on the same days I use Retin A. My skin gets pretty dry, but I admit, the Retin A took about 6 months to work and all of the staining I had from the cystic acne disappeared.
Really??? Im so glad to here that the staining will go away, I cannot do without makeup because my face has all these brown spots from the big cystic acne marks. Thanks for the info!!
I appreciate it!!
Mine did! It took 6 months for the lighter ones and about a year total for my face to be smooth again. I've been very happy with the results! I consider my skin one of my best features now- don't know if that is thanks to the retin a or thanks to being out of my 20s so it calmed down a lot!
