Sam's Club Vs. Costco?

DH and I are looking to sign up for one...but can't decide!  We have both relatively close to our home.  Any advice?

Also - what are the annual fees?  Thanks.

Re: Sam's Club Vs. Costco?

  • My DH and I just got a Costco membership and went for the first time on Saturday.  We paid $50 for the year.  We've only made the one trip but I was really happy, especially with their produce!

  • Costco...I have a business membership through work, and they don't support Sam's club at all because of their affiliation with Walmart and their treatment of their employees.
  • costco. they aim so much more so at families, whereas Sam's focuses more on businesses. Like, at sam's you'd get a giant jug of mayo, but at costco, you'll get 2 or 3 jars that are a more usable size.

Plus, costco's produce is SO much better than Sam's, and they have a lot more organic options as well.

Their pizza (from the cafe) is by far and away my favorite pizza too.

Oh, and we get the 100 dollar membership. You get a certain percentage back as a rebate each year, but if it's less than 50, you just go to customer service and they give you the discount. We got almost 60 back for last year, so it's definitely been worth it for us.

  • Costco!

Costco has high quality produce and baked goods, and like a pp said--I don't support Sam's Club/Walmart.

Not sure what our membership rates are... my husband set that up.

  • Costco.  No question.

Our membership is $50 a year.  We <3 it!!

I refuse to support anything affiliated with Walmart.

  • Sam's is actually closer to our house but we go to Costco. I went to both a with other people before we actually signed up. I agree with the PP about the quality produce, healthier options, and organic choices (if that is important to you). I don't like to shop at Wal Mart either.

Membership is $50 like others said. We have been approached by people at Costco to go higher since we would earn enough cash back, but I think it means signing up for their AmEx card, which we don't want to do just yet.

We buy a LOT of stuff there, so let me know if you have questions about specifics.

Costco has more organic stuff, better produce and a better bakery selection. They also have Frederic Fekai shampoo/conditioner and I'm addicted to that so...

BUT I've found that Sam's Club has a better meat selection and more pop to choose from if you're having a party. Sam's also has better pricing on their "organizing" shelves. Sam's also has a better liquor, wine and beer selection and cheaper prices on wine.

So with that said... I think we'll probably end up switching off every few years. Both stores have stuff that we buy often enough that I don't really care who we go with.

We mostly buy meat (for the dog), beer/wine, some produce, canned goods and then stock up on toilet paper and paper towels.

you don't have to sign up for their amex for the rebate program. You do earn more, and you can earn for purchases not at costco if you have the card. We have the higher membership (it was the same cost to us out of pocket the first year because of a work promotion), and we got 60 bucks back last year (which basically means our membership ended up costing the same as Sam's).

  • We go to Sam's Club because the closest Costco is at least 30 minutes away.  You can't deny that Sam's/Walmart's policies suck and I do refuse to shop at Walmart.  I (pathetically) justify it by shopping at mostly local businesses for everything else.

The only things we buy there are toilet paper and office supplies for my business.  Like pp's said, food is in huge super bulk sizes. I can't imagine how a regular family would be able to eat it all before it goes bad, plus we have a pretty strict no processed food/organic household so it doesn't do us much good anyway.  I haven't really looked around for anything else to know what they have.

have you looked into the amazon subscribe and save for the things you buy at sam's? You might actually do better there than paying for a membership. Just an idea :)

I like Sam's about the same as Costco and since we're an addition to a business membership we pay only $35 a year at Sam's.  I like Sam's bakery better and they carry some of the baby products that we use that Costco doesn't.  I like Costco's own brand (Kirkland's) better than Sam's stuff.

Maybe it depends on location, but the Sam's I go to carries most things in normal sizes as well as the bigger business sizes of food items.  We generally only buy bread, meat, sometimes paper products (usually cheaper at Target on sale with a coupon), produce, and baby products.

I haven't looked into Amazon...this is actually the first I've heard of subscribe and save?

they have subscribe and save for a ton of stuff. And if you're a mom or a student you can get a free prime account. I don't know what the info is for the student account, but if you google amazon mom, you should be able to find the sign up page.

For some people, it ends up being cheaper because there are no club fees, and no paying for shipping or gas to the store. We get so much at costco, it doesn't make sense for us, but it's a great option for some people. Diapers are a huge savings there (and I typically got them cheaper than I could at either Sam's or costco).
