Br: Ear Infections/Tubes

For those of you who have little ones with tubes - how many ear infections did he/she have before you preceded with getting tubes? I ask because I was filling out paperwork for DD and it asked if she has had chronic near infections - without knowing thier threshold for defining chronic, I didn't know how to answer the question. DD is 22 months and has had 10 or 11 (can't remember exactly how many) in 14 months. Often times she has double ear-infections. Would this be considered chronic? Also, for those with kids who have tubes, did your pediatrician initially address the need for medical intervention or did you bring it up? Thanks!

Re: Br: Ear Infections/Tubes

  • I can't remember for sure, but I want to say Sophia had six infections in a 6-9 month period.  Our pediatrician is the one who brought it up because the infections were effecting her appetite and the antibiotics were making her sick and/or not working each time.  I remember saying to DH that if they didn't bring it up we were going to with the very next infection.

  • I think every ENT Dr. may have their own opinion but for us, R had 6 all within 3-7 months. And when we went for her consultation, they told us she had fluid in her ears.  Also, cold/flu season was approaching so they went ahead and scheduled the surgery. Honestly, best thing we ever did. GL!

  • I would say 10 or 11 infections would qualify as chronic.

  • My pedi office refers after 4 or 5.  C goes to the ENT tomorrow and G has a check of his tubes.  He probably had 3 or 4 late winter spring, one over the summer and then 3 or 4 in the fall/winter and we then got tubes.    I would say 10 or 11 would be chronic...

  • That is definitely chronic! Our dr said 6 ear infections or fluid for 6 months before getting tubes.

  • And I brought up seeing the ent after she had to have injections of rocephin to clear one infection. Thankfully, the pedi was on board with this. Dh has horrible ears (he has an ear infection right now!), and has hearing loss from chronic infections. I didn't want the same to happen to dd and I was worried about her being on such strong antibiotics.

  • Agree with PP.  Our new pedi brought it up after Z's last infection & the antibiotic & drops didn't seem to help.  I'm glad we went to the ENT, because she failed all 4 tests.  Sad  But she's getting tubes this Friday, so hopefully she'll be hearing/feeling lots better.

Hope things go well for you!

  • I would call that chronic! Ella had ear infections that never went away (8 in a row I think) and coupled with how she reacted to all the meds and that was causing GI tract problems and weight loss. They mentioned the ENT and I jumped on it! She got the tubes less than a week later.
  • Your case does sound chronic...My son had chronic ear infections so I would discuss his ears regularly and I wanted to come up with a plan right away.  My son has tubes and they have made a world of difference for him and his comfort and hearing.  I would bring it up and see what your pedi says.
