# applications = job?

How many resumes did you send before getting your current position?

What is your field?

I'm hearing that people are applying to 100+ jobs before finding something... blows my mind.  The last job I got after only applying to 5 places! (back in 2007)

Re: # applications = job?

  • Current job= 2 (but I was already working PT for them, and they quickly hired me on full-time in a different position when I was laid off from my FT one)

    Last job= 12 or so (in 2006)

    Job before that= 2

    Job before that= 6

I'm looking currently (grass has to be greener!)... I've lost count, but it's got to be past 100 now (looking for over a year). Needless to say this is very frustrating compared to my previous job searches. However, I am being a bit pickier on where to apply and what I will accept.

Keep it up... something will materialize. :)

  • I think I sent out  close  to  50 in 2 weeks because I hated  everything about the job.

  • I applied to about 15 positions related to my degree (psychology), with no luck. I then started applying to admin jobs that required a degree and got lucky.

  • This time around = 5 (2 of which led to interviews)

    Field is marketing/communications

  • 1. I went through a recruiter

DH applied to 4 or 5 jobs. He's currently in the interview process, but it's down to 2 jobs. He's hoping for at least one offer.

  • I sent out about 3 or 4 resumes last year and found a job.

  • I have also applied for over 100 jobs in less than a year, my field is social work/criminal justice. I am trying to hold onto hope, but I'm not even getting interviews.

  • I don't know, a lot. 70+ in the last 2 months. No interviews yet. my field is research and development. I'm also frustrated like some of you here.

  • i've easily applied to hundreds. ive always found a job but its like 1 in at least 250 for me. my boyfriend on the other hand has never NOT gotten an offer after sending his resume. blows my mind how easy it is for him.
  • I was in the unfortunate position of graduating college in May 2009.  My field is lighting design, and one of the first things to cut out when budgeting.  I was desperate, applying to ads on craigslist, monster, in the paper, things barely related to my field, sending my resume to companies unsolicited, everything.  I had 3 interviews.  I honestly don't know how many jobs I applied for, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was 100+.  I got a job offer 2 months after graduation from a company advertising on craigslist.

I took that job out of desperation, and hated it.  It took me until Nov 2010 to get another offer.  I applied at probably 15 places and had 3 interviews. I'm so happy I took that first job, because the company I work for now was asking for 1-2 years of experience, and I wouldn't have had that if I had tried to wait for another opportunity.

  • I am a lurker, but my husband and I moved to a new area for his job in November of 2009. I have an advanced degree and 10+ years of experience in my field (nonprofit), so I thought it would be cake to find something I loved.

I applied for 270 positions and went on 46 interviews (although some of those were multiple interviews for the same position.) I kept getting down to the final two or three candidates, which was simultaneously maddening and discouraging.

It took me 9 months to find a job and it's compensated at a far lower level than what I'd like to be (and should be) making and is significantly less challenging than I had hoped. It's a real bummer.

I still feel lucky, though. Could still be looking!

  • I sent out quite a few resumes for HR jobs the field that I'm majoring in and didn't get any interviews. I decided to apply for two jobs in the insurance industry and got hired at the first company that I interviewed with.

    2011 - 1 (reference hire)
    2005 - 1 (reference hire)
    2003 - 3-4
1999 - ~10 (purposefully moved out of state)
    1997 - 1 (reference hire)

I can't imagine applying anywhere cold anymore.  Even when I didn't have references, I had a narrow market that I targeted.  And the markets were certainly better then than they are now.

Field is consulting in the environmental and civil engineering fields.

  • I've easily sent out 100+ resumes and applications and I haven't gotten a single call back. I would say that I have given up hope but I keep applying.

  • I graduated in December 2010 with my post-degree paralegal certificate. I started applying for jobs in the field in early October. I must have applied to about 20-25 jobs. I had 4 interviews and got none of those jobs.

At the end of January, I sent a resume in response to a newspaper ad. The hiring attorney knew my former employer and called her the same day I sent in my resume. My former employer gave me a great reference which got me a short, super informal phone interview. I started two days later. One of my first tasks was to send rejection letters for the job I had gotten. Eighty people had applied for the job. It truly does matter who you know in your field.

Agree 100%. Networking is so important nowdays.

    This is a good post.

  • 2001 (1st job out of college) - I used career services at my University, I had around a dozen first interviews, which turned into about 6 second interviews.  I was offered 4 of those positions

2005 - I got fed up at work one day, applied to 2 jobs on monster.com, had an interview set-up for one of them before the end of the day.  I was offered that job, and I took it.  It was rather rash... but it turned out to be the best move.

2010 - I was looking half-heartedly for about 6 months and probably applied to a dozen positions.  However, I was pretty happy with the job I was in, and I was only looking for promotional opportunities.  I am sure I was under qualified for many of the positions I applied to.  I had interviews for two of the positions, and was offered the job for one (which I accepted).  Of course, just after I accepted the position, I got calls back from three of the positions I had applied to asking me for interviews.  I absolutely think I chose the best role and am very happy it worked out this way.

I am an accountant (CPA) working in corporate finance.

  • It depends a lot on your timing, the field, the economy, your experience & your connections.

For my 1st job out of school most of the resumes were cold.  I probably sent out over 500.  I did get a number of interviews & a fair # of offers.  I had a choice of about 5 employers when I finally made my decision.

The last time I went job hunting which was probably more than 10 years ago, I sent out about 20 resumes, got about 16 interviews & narrowed it down to 2 serious contendors before I picked where I wanted to work.

The warmer you can make your introduction -- meaning sending the resume directly to a person who is expecting it at an employer who needs to fill the job you are qualified to do -- the more likely you are to get the interview / job.  You can send out resumes all day long through various online programs but your changes of being selected are marginal at best.

  • When I graduated college, I sent out 1 application. I'm still in that job 2 1/2 years later.
  • I'm currently weighing offers.  I sent out two resumes and recieved two interviews and one job offer...then I got a counter offer, so I guess it's basically 3 resumes = 2 offers.  I think this is rare.  I am also in the environmental science/engineering field.

My DH is looking for jobs and has sent out about 15-20 resumes and has had 2 interviews, but no offers.  His areas are a geology and bike industry, so pretty diverse.  ;)
