This is my first month (ever) on birth control. Aunt Flo showed up with a vengeance during the 3rd week of the pills. I have been suffering through the most painful, incapacitating, longest lasting cramps I've ever had in my life.
I called my doctor and she says I can take 3 advil every 6 hours. why thanks for the permission but I've been taking more than that and it is not touching the pain.
she says it can take ~3 months for my body to adjust to the pills. But the original plan was only to be on them for 6 months. And then I've heard people say it can take up to a year to adjust back to normal when you go off them. So I am really struggling to understand why this is worth it.
Re: BC
I'm so sorry Leah
I take 4 every 4-6 hours for the cramps, definitely a much higher dosage, and it still doesn't completely help.
I've heard many doctors using the BC method for a few months to help regulate women's cycles, so hopefully your body will adjust soon.
Go get some chocolate, a heating pad, and a Sam's Club sized bottle of advil. Or wine

I know this isn't an easy solution, but I'll echo this idea. I had actually never thought about it before, but I used to get wicked awful cramps and I can't think of a time in the last year and a half or so that I've been working out that they've been anything more than bothersome. I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone either, but just adding my two cents.
It's a good idea, and I've heard that before. I was actually walking laps in my house at midnight last night because it was the only thing I could do to keep from writhing on the floor in tears. I've also spent many hours in the tub over the past 3 days, sometimes even at 4am.
It just kills me that I've never been in this much pain before. Normally cramps suck, but they only last a day and I can handle them. This has been different.

I feel you. I also had to take 800 mg of ibuprofen regularly and use heating pads. Unfortunately because my periods were so painful, I could never keep a regular workout.
I would say it's probably not going to take that long to adjust back off of them if you're only taking them 6 months. It may be long enough to get control of your hormones, or at least to where they can see what's going on. I'm sure that's their thought behind it, although I'd like to see research on how effective that really is.
