Hi fellow Austin Nesties!!
I recently moved to Austin from NC with my hubby. We are loving the area and were SUPER excited to find out about all of the vineyards within a reasonable distance!!
DH got hired for a huge project with SXSW and now that that is winding down, I wanted to plan a surprise vacation for him to TX wine country. I have been doing a bit of research from the TX wine trail website and various other resources, but I wanted to see if any of y'all have any recommendations for specific vineyards to visit and places to stay.
I'm overwhelmed by all of the options!! Thanks in advance!!
Re: TX Wine Trail
Hi and welcome! We did a wine tour for our first anniversary. We stayed at the Cat's Meow, which is a B&B just on the other side of Fredericksburg. It was a little farther out than others, but we enjoyed it.
For the wine tour, we started at the farthest one out on 290 and worked our way back into town. We stopped at Pedernales Cellars, Woodrose, Becker Vineyards, Torre di Pietra, Grape Creek, Rancho Ponte, and the Fredericksburg winery.
Out of those, my favorite by far was Rancho Ponte. I also liked Woodrose and Grape Creek, Torre di Pietra has a nice outside patio area and almost always has live music playing. We also had lunch at the brewery in town and DH really liked that.
Have fun!
Hi! We went to Fredericksburg on our honeymoon and had a great time.
There are a lot of Bed and Breakfasts to stay at - we were late in booking our trip and stayed at a hotel, which wasn't as much fun.
We went to a few wineries and had fun, but I wish that we would have done one of the chartered bus trips so that we could both freely drink and not have to worry about driving.
Also, be sure to eat at August E's restaurant if you're looking for a fancy evening out (http://www.august-es.com/). We got married three years ago and are still talking about how amazing that meal was.

My favorite, by far, is Woodrose. I also like Grape Creek. Becker is too crowded and impersonal for my taste, but it's one (if not THE) most famous out there. Torre di Pietra is also nice just for the patio, but the inside tasting room is too crowded and dark for my liking.
If you're out there, I'd recommend a trip to Luckenbach, if either of you like live music. It's a super famous music 'town' (just 1 building). Get a beer and sit on the patio to listen to some good tunes and relish in some texas music history.
