I am torn, wwyd?
There's a position opening up in my company for an account manager, and my name has been floated around as a good candidate by upper management. It would be a pretty good bump in pay, and I would be salaried instead of hourly. I could work from home some days and have a much more flexible schedule. The downside is that it sounds like the account managers are now having to spend most of their days on the phone reaching out to customers and trying to identify sales leads to pass along to our sales department. I personally don't like selling things, but I don't mind calling the customers and seeing what challenges they're having and how I might be able to fix them.
The position I am in now, I like for the most part. There are tentative plans for the Rochester office to become the regional hub for my business line by the end of the year, and there's a chance I could get a promotion if they hire enough new people to work under me. I don't mind managing people directly, but it is without a doubt my least-favorite part of the job. There's no guarantee of when this would happen, it all depends on how many projects we bring in and if they end up closing the other existing (small) centers in WNY and Northern PA.
What would you do? Go for the new account manager position, which pays awesome that I might not like? Or stay where I am and hope that things work out for the best? Everyone I ask for advice within my company has an agenda, so I feel like I can't get a straight answer.
Re: Need job advice - What would you do?
Hmm, is it possible to just go through the interview process and find out exactly what your duties would entail before you decide either way?
If you don't mind talking to customers, than why not give it a try? I am usually all for promotions and climbing the ladder when I can (well, not anymore since I work with/for DH and I can't go anyplace!!, LOL!).
It sounds like either way, if you stay or get promoted, it is a good deal.
Good luck!
Is there a way you could try the job if you got it for a few weeks and see if you like it? And if not, could you move back to your original position?
I would certainly try to move up if I could. My position doesn't really have that option but if I could, I would.
I would at least interview for the position and ask for clarification on exactly what your role would involve. If you decide it is not for you, then no harm done.
I am with you- I hate selling things, but you did mention that you do like problem solving and that might be a part of it.Plus, more money is always a plus- I'd be all over the flexibility aspect of it as well.
Your other option doesn't sound too promising- waiting for things to come to you in the corporate world usually doesn't happen too quickly.
Is this a new position in the company? Any way to get honest feedback from the person currently in the role, or someone in that department? Shadowing someone who does the job is always an eye opener. Good luck with your decision!
Are you cold-calling? Or calling existing customers? If I were you, if the job meant calling existing customers to find out their needs, and then passing it on to the sales dept. I might be interested. If it involved cold calling, Id pass it right up. I hate cold calling. Although, ironically, I do it now in the beer business - but when you work in beer, and have beer samples - people welcome your cold calls mostly!... but even with that, I still hate going into places I am not familiar with.
Also, find out how much, if any, of the salary as an account manager would be based on commission from the customer calls that you would have to make - if your base salary isnt a significant amount more than your currently hourly pay, I would pass - because commission is never guaranteed...
