Moms to babies under 2

Did you see the new guidelines regarding children under two to remain rear-facing in their car seat?

I am just curious if any of you currently have you child front facing and are planning on switching back to your old car seat.  I just saw something on the news and I am debating getting the old car seat out of the attic for Macy.  Man, she is going to be pissed.  She SCREAMED non-stop in her old rear facing car seat.

Re: Moms to babies under 2

  • We made the decision to keep Alana rear facing as long as possible. She also hated her infant carrier, but as soon as I switched her to the Britax she calmed down. I also have a little mirror that plays music (we call it Alanavision) and that calms her down.

Back when Alana wasan infant I watched a youtube video that showed the crash tests both FF & RF. It's pretty shocking and scary really. To top it off, I've met far too many children who suffered traumatic brain injuries as a result of a car accident. It makes me want to keep Alana in a little bubble and protect her!

It's a personal decision and may not be right for everyone. There are days when I wonder if I'm doing the right thing because I think she would have so much more fun interacting with me. Sigh... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2DVfqFhseo

  • We had only switched the car seat to forward facing in one of our cars and we'll be switching it back.  Do you have a convertible car seat for Macy?  If so, you should just have to switch it around.  I do think there is going to become a point where DS won't do rear facing anymore though.  He already fights getting into the car seat that way and stomps his feet against the back seat.  When he gets really frustrated, he takes his shoe off and tries to throw it at me.  Luckily, his aim isn't so good yet!
  • I know this is all about safety, but aren't kids too tall by that point? I am picturing their legs up in the air because they have no room to hang down.

  • Declinn is in a convertable car seat that is rear facing.  She is still below the weight limit for turning her around.  I plan on keeping her rear facing as long as possible.  I can't immagine it being better if her knees are up to her chin.
  • I have a long way to go before I need to worry about this, but I do plan on keeping Kennedy rear facing for as long as possible.  I know it's not nearly as entertaining or comfortable, but I'd rather deal with an unhappy child than not having her around if something were to happen.  A good friend of mine was in an accident a few months ago, and the police officer told her that having her daughter rear facing (at 20 months) was the best thing she could have done, because she probably would have been seriously injured if she had been forward facing.

  • For some reason I am thinking the front facing car seat we bought can't be switched around to rear facing :(  My mom just bought a new front facing car seat for Macy that can be switched around.  Hmm, I will have to figure out how to get the seat to Texas (to save us from buying another car seat) since she no longer fits into her infant seat.

Ugh.  I seriously bought her the new car seat 3 weeks ago.  Why couldn't they have come out with this info then?!

Can you return it if you bought it that recently?  There are plenty of convertible car seats out there that are good to 60 or 75 lbs.  We bought the Britax Marathon and it has been great.

As for whoever asked about the long legs, someone posted a picture on MMs when this was discussed yesterday and their kid sits with her legs crossed indian-style (sorry, can't think of another way to describe it).  She looked to be about 3-4 so I suppose a kid could get away with this for a while.  At this point though, I think there's going to come a time where DS rebels against that.  He's already not crazy about being crunched in there and he's only 16 months.

  • I have known about this ERF recommendation since late last year as they've been talking about this a lot on the Bump boards. That being said, I just switched DD to FF this weekend...she's so tall that her legs are squished. It has also become harder for me to get her into her carseat. She's still RF in DH's truck, though. I guess as with every recommendation, you just need to use your best judgment.

  • I had originally planned to keep P RF but shortly before the twins came I moved him FF because the logistics of 3 carseats across in my car wasn't going to happen with his Britax RF.  I bought the twins the Chicco Keyfit 30  hoping that I can keep them in those longer before moving them to their big seats.

Our situtation is unique because had a bought a brand new Ford Edge right before we found out about the twins, so we weren't able to trade in unless we wanted to take a huge loss on our car.  If we were able to logistically fit three RF seats across I would have kept P RF much longer.  I did find a carseat that will fit three across and rear-facing but P has been FF so long and he is now over two.

Haha- thanks, Blossom!  I suppose even criss-cross would have explained it- no idea why I couldn't think of that!

  • I am going to be the rebel and say that I switched DD to ff a week before she turned one.  With my next one I will do the same.  There will always be new recommendations and safety warnings coming out but if you think about it, there were none of these regulations (and not even car seats) when some of us were infants and we're just fine.   I guess I have an old-school mentality but ff works best for us.
