Tell me about your experience with Depo..

Hey ladies, I am looking to prevent pregnancy for about another 6-12 months. I can never remember a pill, the ring gives me UTIs, and I don't need to prevent for that long annnnd I'm starting to get sick of condoms.

I feel like this leaves me with depo, any thoughts or suggestions? What was your experience?

Re: Tell me about your experience with Depo..

  • Depo sucked for me. Sure, I had no period but I also lost my sex drive and gained weight. Even after I went off it, my cycles were totally messed up for over a year.

I wouldn't recommend it for trying to prevent for such a short period of time.

  • Have you considered the patch?
  • I was on depo for about 3 years, I started taking it when I turned 18. It was great for the first 2 shots (6 months) but after that I started getting really bad side effects. Headaches,Leg cramps,Spotting for 2 months , Anxiety, I gained about 15lbs in a month (which was a lot for a 5`2 stick) I had zero interest for sex I didn't even like my FH to touch me, it made my skin crawl. It dragged me down. I went from a happy care free person to punching a hole in the wall because he wouldn't let me mash the potatoes, not my proudest moment Embarrassed

So I won't recommend it but I know that people have different reactions to certiain medications. I always thought I wouldn't rememeber the pill either but after that experience and not really like any of the other options, the ring and patch would make me nervous and condoms give me bad UTIs, I chose the pill.

  • I was on Depo for a little over two years. I never had an issue with weight gain, however I was already a little overweight when I started it, however, I was able to lose 60 pounds last year while I was taking it. I have not had a period since before I started Depo. I just started taking the pill again because it's really not good to stay on the shot for a long period of time. I am currently taking Seasonique, and strangely enough I did not have a cycle at all. I really miss the shot. I felt like there were no worries, I didn't have to take a pill everyday, and lost the condoms all together!!
  • Hmm :( sounds like depo might not be the way to go. I was hoping by only taking 1-2 shots it would be no big deal, but I am seriously afraid of the weight gain and I've also read it can give you facial hair which was like my most serious concern (lol)

I'm really torn on what to do because without any hormones I have a perfect 28 day cycle, no break outs, no sore boobs, but condoms pretty much suck and I do worry about natural family planning because it is so involved.

  • I was on depo for 3 years.  It was the best BC I ever had.  I would get a shot every 3 months.  After the shot I would be very emotional for 3 days then I was fine.  No weight gain, no lack of sex drive.  4X a year I would have a long AF.  It was great.  As soon as I went off of it I had a totally normal cycle, O and all.

  • I tried it once, maybe it would have gotten better if I stuck with it, but it was just terrible for me, I was an emotional train wreck, didn't have my period for 2 months, then had it for a month straight. I would never do it again.
  • I will absolutely go back to Depo when I'm done having kids, but wouldn't even think about risking it now.  When you're done with the shot, it can take YEARS for your cycles to come back.  I liked it for the year I was on it.

  • I was off and on Depo for years.  The main purpose was to stop my periods, as they were very painful.  I don't recommend it, especially for your situation.  It causes bone loss.  I'm 29 years old and have low bone density.  You don't want to take that chance.  It's not worth osteoporosis.

Have you ever considered a diaphram and spermicide? I used it for many years with great success, couldn't take the pill, turned me into an "ax murderer" I guess kinda like the mashed potatoes incident the other poster had lol... you have to be careful with your positions, but it could be an alternative for you...

  • I gained alot of weight on Depo.  Before my husband and I started TTC I was on the Nuva Ring and I loved loved loved it!! Easy to use, only had to remember once a month...perfect
  • I was on Depo for 5 years. When I started Depo there weren't any studies on long term side effects for perfectly healthy women and their perfectly healthy lady parts. I am apart of a 10yr study to determine those side effects. I LOVED DEPO when I was on it. But when I came off it took me almost 6mo to get my period back to regular cycles. I didn't have any of the other side effects associated with depo. However, I have been told that my hormone levels haven't returned to normal yet (I've been off for 3yrs) and that is likely the cause of my miscarriage last October. Just talk to your dr. about this, you should be asking them anyways-or whom ever does your well-woman care.
  • Depo was a great experience for me while I was on it. I would get intense headaches for a few days after the shot, but they would go away. Never got a period after the first month. I was on it for a year. The horrible part was after I stopped. I had the worst period of my life - it lasted for over a month & was so heavy that I thought I was dying. I bled through everything with in minutes. It was not cool. The doctor said this is normal because when you do not have a period the blood has to go somewhere, and some bodies do not reabsorb it.
