canister or upright vacuum?

i'm in the market for a new vacuum (budget ~$150) and am debating between the two. which do you prefer/own?  our house cleaner used the canister and it left the nicest lines, but not sure if it's going to be a hassle (too bulky/heavy) to maneuver around the house.  any and all in put is definitely appreciated- thanks!!

Re: canister or upright vacuum?

  • I hate canisters! I do not like to pull that thing around the house getting caught up on furniture or tipping over on its side.

So glad I finally bought an upright. Also takes up less space in the closet.

  • For me it would depend on the types of floor in your house. Do you have mostly carpet? If so, then I would go with an upright because it's easier to manuver. If you have mostly hardwood floors then I would go with a canister because it's easier to use on hardwood. You can get a great vacuum in either style so it really does come down to personal preference and application.

  • I hate canisters!  I used to have one and every time I vacuumed I would think, "Who was the masochistic idiot who invented this thing?"  It was constantly getting stuck on things, tipping over, and it was awful to drag around.

  • We have one of each and I much prefer the canister vacuum. The upright stays in the basement where its all carpet and it works great on carpet but upstairs where we have hard floors I love the canister.

Agreed.  They're lighter than uprights, easier to operate to clean the stairs, and over all just way better IMHO.  I've had uprights all my life.  Then one day at my part time job we got a canister vac that I used and instantly feel in love with them.  I DESPISE vacuuming, but I enjoyed it so much I researched them and found Miele canisters.  They put Dyson to shame and can easily be repaired.
