used baby stuff pricing - help needed

Clearly, this has become my obsession lately.  I have an offer from a friend of a friend to buy the entire "lot" of her baby stuff.  It's gender neutral, and a few years old (I can't remember if her daughter is 3 or 5 now).  She's asking me to come up with a fair price for the following (in her words, with no brand names or specifics - she hasn't responded to my request for more info):

travel crib,

bouncer,

swing,

high chair,

infant car seat,

rear facing car seat,

stroller.

All she says about price is "find a fair price for the items, you have been shopping around so let me know what you find too"

I already have hand-me-downs of half of these things, although having a second of them for Grammy's house wouldn't hurt.

Any suggestions for what I could/should offer her? I hate that she isn't coming up with a price herself!!

Re: used baby stuff pricing - help needed

  • I think between 1/4 and 1/3 of the new item price is fair for a private party sale if the item isn't too old and is in good condition.  I'm basing this off of what I see on price tags at Children's Orchard -- their gear tends to be priced at 1/3 to 1/2 of new price and if you brought in something to sell they'd give you less than 1/4 of the new price.

You can also browse the completed auctions on eBay or look on Craigslist to get an idea for pricing.

Be sure to check the manufacture date on the car seats.  You should not use a car seat more than 6 years old.

I'd want to know more before I made an offer like what kind of swing it is (papasan or regular - big difference in price), brands of car seats and how old they are, what kind of stroller it is - does it go with the infant seat? etc.  What's a travel crib - a pack and play?  Can you go look at her stuff first?

  • Thank you.  After reading your replies and talking to DH, we're probably going to pass on her "offer" altogether. There are too many unknowns, too many duplicates of things we've been given for free, and we'd like our munchkin to have some new things of his own.
