Re: Playsilks

  • I'm not sure about formal playsilks but you can get the material at a fabric store and cut them into the size you want.

I'm possess a craft deficiency, so please excuse me if this is a stupid question. Will they unravel if I cut them?

  • kind of but not too badly. They sort of roll up at the edges.

  • I've never seen them locally.  The pieces I have are a bit frayed at the ends where it was cut, but they have had a lot of handling and haven't ripped.  I use them for play therapy -- I don't recall the specific material I bought, but it wasn't smooth-silky ... it had a slight crinkle to it.  I bought it at Walmart (cheap), but I'm sure you could find a wider selection at JoAnn's.  It would be fun to experiment with various silk-like textures.

  • Um, this may sound dumb, but whats a playsilks?
  • not dumb at all -- i hadn't heard about them until a couple of years ago.  a pack typically contains multiple colors of square pieces of silk.  i think most use them for imaginative play ... using the silks for capes, head dresses, belts, shawls, baby wraps, dresses ... similar to dress-up and branching out for creativity.  i've also used them to create stories ... so a blue silk may be a sky or water, and kids can express through the silks and/or toys what they may not be able to verbalize.  i'm sure there are more uses -- this is just my take :)
